C8 Question

Hi list, I installed on my workstation C8.1 (1911) and performed a minimal install and then installed XFCE from EPEL. I noticed a strange behaviour (don't know if this is the wanted default). If I try ,from normal user shell, to run command like "reboot" or "shutdown -h now" system will reboot/shutdown. This happens on tty console, on xfce terminal and ssh session. My user is not in wheel and during install I have not enabled checkbox to give that user administration permission. I tried to create a new user with adduser but got the same problem. To solve this I modified polkit login1 policy on /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.login1.policy setting <allow_active>no</allow_active> for statement that concern reboot and shutdown/poweroff. Why on CentOS a normal user can shutdown the system without root privileges? I think that on any server normal user should not be able to shutdown the system without privileges. This is a bug or a wanted default? Thanks in advance.

yum update / kernal update failed - remove or repair

I have a VPS running C7. I ran a 'yum update' which included a kernel update. The yum update wasn't a total success because mariadb updates failed. However everything else appeared to work. However, when I rebooted the server it did not restart. I have managed to get the ISP's support desk to boot the server by selecting the previous kernel, and I now have access to my box again. As I will probably only have one chance to fix this (without having to get the ISP's help again) I was wondering if there are any clear instructions on how to remove a failed kernel RPM update, returning the server to the state it was in prior to the YUM update?

Fetchmail

Hi all, Anyone know how to specify for fetchmail in .netrc the "folder" to read ? If tried folder XYZ and it says unknown token folder. Man page says that should work. Jerry

YUM (DNF) Possible Confusion Centos 8

Folks In a test Centos 8 installation as a guest of VirtualBox on Windows 10, I want to install ffmpeg, and support for exfat. They're not in the standard distribution (as far as I know), so I issue as root: yum -y --enablerepo rpmfusion-free-updates install ffmpeg fuse-exfat exfat-utils and that works just fine. The ffmpeg functionality works; I haven't tested exfat yet. Good wifi NIC?

Good morning, I'm looking for a good USB Wifi NIC that will work with the kernel modules for a stock CentOS 8.1. I have an ALFA AWUS036ACH NIC but it looks like the drivers need to compiler for the kernel and I'm having trouble with that. So I'd like something that works, but not necessarily high performing, so I can build the drivers for the ALFA NIC. Thanks! Jeff

Hello, I have an Intel NUC7PJYH running CentOS 6.8. This is a NUC with standard USB, 1GbE and 2*HDMI. Installation was no problem providing acpi=off. The problem is that by default the two displays are mirrored and I can’t seem to separate them. I can only see one HDMI port from CentOS. I need to see both HDMI ports discreetly. can't send email from my new centos 8

Hello to all! I apologize in advance, for the following could be too simple, but I can't figure it out. I configured a vps using centos 8, all is working fine but I'm not able to send email from this server. I tried $ telnet smtp.mailtrap.io 25 but it doesn't work yet $ telnet www.google.ca 80 does work and particularly $ telnet smtp.mailtrap.io 2525 does work too. I temporarily disabled the firewall, and selinux, but no luck. Can anyone provide any pointers? Thanks in advance, -- Victor PS: I'm sorry if there were English spelling errors.

Centos 8: change desktop at display manager

In a new install of Centos 8, I installed the xfce4 packages from EPEL. I cannot find a way to choose it. I was guessing this would be like Centos 7. On the display manager, after I put in my user name, there is the little * by the password. When I do that, I see choices with names like Wayland Classic X11 but I don't see XFCE4 session or similar. I am guessing I missed an XFCE4 package from EPEL? pj -- Paul E. CentOS 7.6 1810 vs. VirtualBox : bug with keyboard layout selection

Hi, I'm currently working on my next Linux book, which will be an elementary course about CentOS administration. I'm using VirtualBox for all the installer screenshots. Since CentOS has recently been upgraded to version 7.6, I thought I might as well base all book references on this version. So I downloaded the 7.6 1810 minimal ISO and started a fresh installation in VirtualBox. I'm using a Swiss French keyboard layout (ch-fr or fr_CH-latin1), so one of the first things I do in the installer is replace the default French AZERTY keyboard (since I use the french language) by a swiss french QWERTZ layout. Now when I reach this dialog in the installer and try do define my new layout, the slider in the selection window doesn't appear, and clicking on any of the first layouts doesn't do anything, so I'm basically stuck there. I'm running OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 KDE on my workstation, so I tried the same thing with the previous CentOS 7.5 1804 minimal ISO, and the keyboard selection dialog works perfectly. So my intuition would tell me that there's a nasty bug in the CentOS 7.6 installer. Maybe it went unnoticed, since most folks stick to the default keyboard layout selected in their language. Any suggestions ?
