I just pull the mock from epel and use it on a stock COS5 box.  There 
are some dependencies but they can all be satisfied by epel as well.

[slords at b64-5 mock]$ rpm -q mock python yum
mock-0.9.14-2.el5
python-2.4.3-27.el5
yum-3.2.22-20.el5.centos
