Well, if you override some yum variables (like releasever, which is
normally gathered from distroverpkg=centos-release , as written in
yum.conf), there isn't really something we can do.
But it's true that mirrorlist doesn't have to answer for previous
minor release either : that's usually something that is in place
during several days after a release , but normally removed after (like
6.4 doesn't work anymore and mirrorlist answers "6.4 is not a valid
release or hasnt been released yet")

So, in your specific case, not overriding the yum variable is the way
to go if you want updates, etc ..
