As you said, it would be worthwhile to capture the output of top.  I
like to use

# date >> /tmp/topper.txt; top -b -n 1 >> /tmp/topper.txt 

You will get the top output in that text file - it can be useful to
tweak other things in root's  toprc prior to doing this (like hiding
zombie processes).  If I'm having weird problems like this on a box I
frequently put that top command into a cron that runs every 5 or 10
minutes and you can see what's going on with the box.
