I had done over 40+ servers using yum. It works perfectly. But not too sure
about apt-get. Using yum, it will work fine as long as you do it step by
step. Haven't had any issues so far.
Realworld reality sometimes means that the box is remote.

bottom line: don't use yum/apt to upgrade
boot on the centos-4 cd and "linux upgradeany"
