Hi.

Centos 3 or 4?  Standard or newer yum?

Maybe a "yum clean all" would help?

Also, that can be a processor intensive action - what does top show?
What happens if you just leave it running for an hour?

Another idea is that the yum folks are preparing to do a new release
which will have lots of speed improvements.  You could wait for that
if you don't mind running non-centos packages.
