Because if not, it does not recognize that there is a CD in the
drive. If I mount it, then I can read the CD.

I do and get the following message:
Reload rewritable or blank media.
Please replace the in-drive media by a rewritable or blank media
I know that the CD-RW media is good, I have Centos 4 on another
computer and it works properly there.
