Have you considered Co-linux?
I have it running on XP and 2000 desktops.
Basically it's a full Debian distro that runs inside Windows, I even
installed KDE/IceWM/Gnome and used VNC viewer to show the GUI as a
window in Windows.
Worked great for me as a way of running forwarded X sessions over SSH.
