This is a useful technique, thanks for sending it. the thing is, i *had* installed java via rpm - the rpms you can download from Sun. But some other rpms i wanted to install (i think the "red hat application server" bundling of tomcat et al) were expecting a different capability that sun hadn't mentioned. danno
