Not sure if this was a typo or not, but it should be ctrl+alt+F1 to
get the the terminal.

To my knowledge, switchdesk works only for the user who runs it. the
default desktop is controlled by /etc/sysconfig/desktop

Also, you should never log into an x session as root. In fact, beyond
initial setup, I disable the root account and use sudo when I need
access. But I'm probably a bit more paranoid than most.
