Also, the mysql.org SRPM for MySQL 4.x on rhel3 works wonderfully. 
Been using it for a while.  Problem is if you need other parts of the
system like apache or php to be linked against MySQL 4, in which case
these packages (of which there are many) need to be rebuilt AFAIK.
