There is always CTRL ALT BACKSPACE.

For the new ones around here, it simply kills and restarts X. Sometimes,
even loging out and back in won't be enough to restart X. So you
log out and when presented with the login screen (gdm, usually), you do
a CTRL ALT BACKSPACE just to make certain it restarts.
