I create a /boot partition at the very beginning of the disk (100MB should be lergely enough for that purpose) and use the remaining space with LVM (swap and as much partitions as I can :). I always keep some GB unallocated if I want to later grow a partition. Give LVM a try, you will never go back after :). Regards, Gilles.
