[CentOS] Any long-time CentOS users on list using Ubuntu as well?

sudo -s does the same
sudo passwd root will allow you to change the password and log in as
root (still can use sudo if you want)

To search for new packages, apt-cache search $search

If you're running ubuntu, you should look into upgrading to 6.06
(dapper) as that has longer term backport support.
