[CentOS] ftpd that supports LDAP?

That's what I thought, but then I noticed all these pro-ftpd mods for mod_ldap and whatnot, and became... perplexed.  Installed pro-ftpd from yum and wound up not being able to log in without a local account.

Since ftp daemons use pam and pam can use ldap if configured via
authconfig, I cannot envision a scenario where an ftp daemon would need
to contact ldap directly.
