Todd,
before you use it, you'll have to mount it - /dev/sda is the disk,
/dev/sda1 is its first partition. Probably you'll have to
mount /media/usbdisk
as a regular user
or
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1
(or similar) as root.
