[CentOS] Centos 5 not shutting down

 From a terminal prompt I issue

shutdown now

Everything seems to be going well, I get:

Telling INIT to go to single user mode.
INIT: Going to single user
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
INIT: Sending processes the KILL signal
sh-3.1#

I still seem to be logged in, and at /

oh, I was logged in as root.
