It's the ICH8 intel chipset family.
It appears there is a "Legacy mode" (ATA).
The installer does work when I change the SATA operation to "Legacy
mode" in the BIOS. (alltough a bit slow)
Having patched the machine to the latest kernel (2.6.9-42.0.8), the
system still doesn't work in normal sata-mode.

Something about 'video modes not supported'. I will try a 'nofb'
install...
Note that sound is working, to my surprise (as sound is often the
first to stop working on new intel chipsets)

Yes, off course. Rumours have it FC6 works on Optiplex 745. So I suppose
CentOS 5 will also be working on those systems.
