Maybe not a full answer to your question, but groups are pretty sophisticated in that they have a list of mandatory, default, and optional packages. E.g.: $ yum groupinfo "GNOME Desktop Environment" [...] Mandatory Packages: nautilus control-center yelp gnome-terminal gnome-panel gnome-applets gnome-session metacity Default Packages: [...] -- Daniel
