Ahh, I didn't know you could ldd modules.  But I still cannot see a problem:

# ldd /usr/lib/php/modules/fileinfo.so
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
        libmagic.so.1 => /usr/lib/libmagic.so.1 (0xf7fb8000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xf7e8c000)
        libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0xf7e7c000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x56555000)
