Take a look at the mirror list and find the one that gives you a stable and fast connection. It may not necessarily be physically closest to you. http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=13 Another thing you might want to consider as an option is to try a minimal type install and later yum install other packages as needed.
