Curiosity killed the cat, so I went and looked at the config files
in /boot for the latest 3 versions. No changes shown there for AC97 or
8111 stuff. So now it sounds like either a loadable module-related
problem, either in the module itself or the modprobe conf. I wonder if
some parameter change is needed.
