Following up my own post, one of the updates died (the workstation, not
the server update), with
Error Downloading Packages:
  1:net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.el5_5.1.i386: failure:
RPMS/net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.el5_5.1.i386.rpm from updates: [Errno 256]
No more mirrors to try.
  device-mapper-1.02.39-1.el5_5.2.i386: failure:
RPMS/device-mapper-1.02.39-1.el5_5.2.i386.rpm from updates: [Errno 256]
No more mirrors to try.

 So, what's going on?
