You probably don't want to use the localdomain zone, or 127.0.0.1 as the 
address, and the right hand side of the CNAME should be a fully-qualified domain 
name, but otherwise you are close.  Are you actually using this DNS server? 
The client side will use whatever servers are listed in your /etc/resolv.conf 
file for lookups and only search the domains specified there for names that 
aren't fully qualified.
