[CentOS] [CentOS 6] what really starts x11

I finally see in /var/log/messages (which I looked at first) that the error.
prefdm is respawning too fast...

still stuck... I tried removing all files in the ~ directory in /root 
and my user. Same result no X windows
by default. startx still works.
