I've never known of a release with this type of situation. As There was already such situations. postgresql84 was introduced in CentOS 5.5 for example. This is really great and extends the life of the platform, but as you suggest is probably not without costs in terms of complexity (we regularly run into the odd problem with PostgreSQL)
