Resource scarcity has changed dramatically over the past couple 
decades. HD space, for OS-installed files anyway, is about the least 
of anyone's worries these day.

I only consider separate partitions for three directory trees:

1. /boot -- for compatibility with older BIOSes
2. /home -- for continuity across systems or upgrades
3. /srv  -- mostly human-maintained site data
