We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of CentOS-5.8 for the i386 and x86_64 Architectures. CentOS-5.8 is based on the upstream EL 5.8 release and includes packages from all variants including Server, Client, Virtualization, and Clustering. All upstream repositories have been combined into one to make it easier for end users to work with. This is just an announcement email, not the release notes. The Release Notes for CentOS-5.8 can be found on-line at : http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.8 Everyone is encouraged to look through them once. Also worth browsing through are the CentOS FAQs: http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ +++++++++++++++++++++++ Upgrading from CentOS-5.7 ( or CentOS-5.0/5.1/5.2/5.3/5.4/5.5/5.6): If you are already running CentOS-5.7 or any older CentOS-5 version then all you need to do is update your machine via yum by running : 'yum update' Running 'yum list updates' before doing the update is recommended, so you can get a list of packages that are going to be updated. +++++++++++++++++++++++ Downloading CentOS-5.8 for new installs: When possible, consider using torrents to run the downloads. Not only does it help the community and keeps mirrors from running up high bandwidth bills, in most cases you will find its also the fastest means to download the distro. There are currently over a hundred people seeding CentOS-5 and it's possible to get upto 100mbps downloads via these torrents. While torrent files will do their own content checks, and only the right torrent will register and download from torrent.centos.org - its very important for your own security that an md5/sha1sum check is done on the .torrent file itself, and ensure that only the torrent.centos.org tracker is being used. Sha1sum's are more secure than md5's. Whenever possible, use sha1sum's instead of md5. CentOS-4 i386 and x86_64 End of Life (EOL)

This is the notification of the End of Life (EOL) for CentOS 4. The 7-year enterprise lifetime of CentOS-4 ends now. CentOS-4 has been copied to the CentOS Vault. The last released tree is available here: http://vault.centos.org/4.9/ All architectures of CentOS-4 (i386, x86_64, ppc, s390, and s390x) are impacted. Support for the CentOS-4 Cluster Server and the CentOS-4 Global File Server (csgfs) is also ended. The CentOS-4.8 and 4.9 trees will be emptied from the CentOS mirrors in short order. CentOS-4 will remain available in the CentOS Vault, along with CentOS-2 and CentOS-3, indefinitely. You can use the vault in the same way you have used the CentOS mirrors in the past, however no updates will be released for CentOS-4 moving forward. Accordingly, the CentOS Project strongly recommends that you migrate any CentOS-4 installs to a newer version of CentOS (either CentOS-5 or CentOS-6). ================================================ If you have workloads that you can not move to a newer version CentOS, Red Hat, Inc. offers an optional support extension called the "Extended Life-cycle Support (ELS) Add-On Subscription" for their Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 product. The ELS Subscription provides up to three additional years of limited Software Maintenance (Production 3 Phase) for RHEL 4 with unlimited technical support, critical Security Advisories (RHSAs) and selected Urgent Priority Bug Advisories (RHBAs). This service from Red Hat, Inc. would require both a RHEL 4 subscription and an ELS subscription. Note: The CentOS Project is not affiliated with Red Hat, Inc. CentOS-4 is not, nor does it contain, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. However, CentOS-4 is built from publicly available sources released by Red Hat, Inc. Because of these common source files, work loads running on CentOS-4 should be able to be moved to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and allow you to use that platform with ELS for an additional 3 years if you need that service.
