Actually I think I have to rollback, for the first time for weeks it has frozen. The only change is the 4.4 running kernel. Think I have to go back to 4.2.

well, in this case, I would make a complete (dd) backup of the SD-card
and just remove the old files along with their references in the
corresponding files in /boot. If this won't work, you can always use
your backup.
