Yeah, the only reason I deleted them is because googling suggested it was worth doing before a rebuilddb. HOWTO? Upgrade Centos-2 to Centos-3

I've been Googling on this all day, installing GPG Keys, and trying different yum configurations. I noticed a similar question in the list a couple of months ago about going from RHEL to Centos-3, but the answer wasn't definitive. Has anyone done this? Can this be done? Can it be done with yum? If so, how? When I 'yum update' I get /usr/bin/yum, yummain.main, yummain.py, clientStuff.py errors, and a "ValueError: unpack list of wrong size" error. Would definitely appreciate any direction. Need apache ftp help please

System = CentOS / Apache 2.0 / HTML files location = /var/www/html Nat'd IP - ports 80, 20, 21 already opened & routed to internal ip. I desperately need the quick & dirty solution. I need a setup where one user can ftp from another desktop (windows) to upload new website files. I currently have CuteFTP, but will use anything needed at this point. I need to try to test this today. VERY new to linux, I am completely bogged down trying to learn command-line syntax. Thanks in advance, Beth

There is an updated redhat-config-nfs package for CentOS 3.3 (and added to 3.1) https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2004-434.html refers Updated file is :- redhat-config-nfs-1.0.13-6.noarch.rpm in updates/i386/RPMS/ This is available at http://mirror.centos.org/3.1/ and should be on all mirrors within a few hours. To update to the latest version 'yum update redhat-config-nfs' should be sufficient.

CPAN problems?

Sorry if this is off topic, but the cpan mail list seems quite ded, and I was wondering if any of you have had the same problem. when ever I do a perl -MCPAN -e "install Bundle::CPAN" I get this error: ---------------------------------- Net::Telnet is up to date. network card / kudzu

When I have installed centOS, Kudzu says my network cards have been removed, and right after it finds them again and asks me to configure them? It looks like it is the same thing it finds that it just said was removed. There are 3 Relatek|RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ cards in there and it is all of them it will remove and reconfigure. It doesn't matter if I select ignore or reconfigure them, they still work after the reboot. It is just a little strange and seems a little buggy ;) brgds Ulrik

I did not write or imply that nVIDIA cards never work. Rather, I wrote that they may not work. By this, I meant that they do not work with some monitors. In addition to me, two people have written to the group recently about the nVIDIA problem. They can vouch for the fact that there is sometimes a problem. I agree that nVIDIA cards work for many people (including for me, which I also wrote). But the fact that they work for many people does not solve the problem when one does not work with a specific monitor. This topic is near and dear to my heart, as I first encountered the problem when I was trying to install CentOS on machine with an nVIDIA card and using a monitor with which nVIDIA cards do not work (my Mag DX1495). At the beginning, I did not know that the card was the problem, I only knew that the screen went blank toward the end of the install. In addition to trying to solve the problem by tweeking the XF86Config file (boy, was that futile!), it literally took me hours of parts swapping, distribution swapping, and OS swapping (trying Windows too), to finally figure out that the nVIDIA card was the problem. (Some might say that the card/monitor combination was the problem, but Windows has no problem with the combination.) Christopher, I have a couple of other points. My recent email with the subject "nVIDIA on CentOS 3.3" was specifically in response to Kevin Wood's Fri, 17 Sep 2004 email with the subject "Does the nvidia graphic card problem still exist with CentOS-3.3?". The wording of my email came out wrong because I was responding to Kevin's email (which I copy below, along with my response on Sunday). As you can see from Kevin's email, he had problems with nVIDIA cards, and he was wondering whether CentOS 3.3 would resolve them. So I was writing to let him know the answer (No!). I have just set up a box - HOSTNAME mail.abni.com It has Qmail setup. I also want this box to serve as the host for our website - abni.com Can someone point me in the direction of where to go next. I am unsure if HOSTNAME will be a problem as a web server. Currently I have loaded a html doc in - /var/www/html, but I had to load from cd directly on this machine. Is is neccessary to setup ftp to be able to upload html from remote system? Don't know if this is important at this point - but this system is NAT'd to an internal ip. Heck of a 1st Linux project, huh. That's for all the advice. Beth

Thank you for the answer to my question, it is much appreciated. Although there are solutions to the problem as other people point out. I don't see the point in using a graphics card which works with drivers that have to be rebuilt everytime the kernel is updated. I've been there and done it, it is unnecessary in 2004. Kevin Wood. Hey, This was exactly the situation under CentOS 3.1. Moral of the nVIDIA story: if the monitor/display card/motherboard combination works for you, great. If not, using a display card from a different manufacturer may be the best solution. IMHO. Rick

Christopher, The wording of my email came out wrong. I did not intend to cast aspersions on CentOS. I wrote to the CentOS and/or cAos mailing lists some months ago on this topic, and I also put up an FAQ on the problem (which you can find in the FAQ's under Installation). In my mind, my message yesterday was in the context of my prior emails and the FAQ. Back then, I went through hours of trial and error tests, and I found exactly the same problem with exactly the same hardware when I was running Fedora 1 (and perhaps Debian as well -- on Debian, I am not sure, but I am 100% sure about Fedora). nVIDIA on CentOS 3.3

Hey, I tried it. The short answer is that nVIDIA cards are OK for text, but may not work at all under X. I downloaded the 3.3 ISO's, and burned new CD's. I did an X desktop install on a test bench P3 600 MHz system with a 4.3 gig drive. I did the install with a known-to-work Voodoo Banshee card to get the system going. I used a Mag DX1495 monitor, which I know does not to work on Linux with nVIDIA cards (but which works just fine running Windows with nVIDIA cards). Everything installed OK with only a minor glitch toward the end (just when going into the reboot, after setting up the monitor and display card, there were some messages about cannot find some graphics files). After going into my regular user account and adjusting some preferences, I shut the system down, replaced the Voodoo Banshee card with an nVIDIA Riva TNT 2 card, and restarted the computer. During startup, kudzu detected the hardware change, and configured the machine for the new card following my confirmation. (Windows can do this automatically, why not Linux?) Sure enough, when X tried to load, the screen went blank. Not only did the screen go blank for the X console #7, but the screen was blank for the 6 other consoles as well. I knew this because I could change to my favorite with F2, then Ctl-Alt-del to reboot. The screen stayed blank until the computer began the new boot, when the screen came back. This was exactly the situation under CentOS 3.1. Moral of the nVIDIA story: if the monitor/display card/motherboard combination works for you, great. If not, using a display card from a different manufacturer may be the best solution. IMHO. Rick

The /proc/sys/vm/pagecache "device" is not present in RH9.

Thank you for the long awaited x86_64 port! Looking through the RedHat pages concerning their EL releases, I find that the ES and WS versions claim to support only 2 CPUs while the AS version supports, well, more. With the CentOS releases following the ES releases, can I assume that this too is limited to two CPUs? Is this a kernel issue or something else? Should I be thinking of loading a non-CentOS release on a quad Opteron box? Thanks, Bill

yum configuration files lost while/after updating ?

Hello centOS users, Today i've installed a fresh centos 3.1, and modified the [update] section of my/etc/yum.conf, to point on my own update repository. My update repository (3.1) contains exactly the same content that the official one. kernel update

Hostname Question?

Is there just one file that stores the Hostname globally? Or if I needed to change the Hostname would I need to update several different files? I am currently using 3.1 Thanks to all.
