Wow, three threads in two days, I promise to be less loquacious from now on. Anyways, I've decided to run CentOS over Whitebox on my firewall because of the timeliness of updates. These packages have been rebuilt but should be the same as the previous release: Xconfigurator These packages have been modified: initscripts If /etc/centos-release is missing then /etc/redhat-release is used instead. An error about the missing file is no longer displayed. error in cron.daily email report

after i updated to 3.3....in my daily email report for /etc/cron.daily i get the following: many times over anyone know what may be causing it? i have search google zcat: stdout: Broken pipe then the last thing to show is my script to run my awstats updates i didnt have this problem before i updated to 3.3 i have read on google that i might be a $LANG setting issue

I am currently running centOS-3.1. I have not received any package updates since Sept 1. Is this in part due to creating new isos which would be named centOS-3.3. How would I go about updating my system from centOS-3.1 to centOS-3.3, or would I even need to and just keep downloading updates like i do now. My system is running very smoothly with no errors or issues, I was just wondering why there hasnt been any package updates available. Would it be necessary to download the new isos and upgrade my system? Will the package updates be available still for centOS-3.1.

so i can just edit my yum.conf file replacing $releasever with 3.3, run yum update and ill be running 3.3? also, i should have any unusual issues?

Hi all, Here's what's going on. The 3.3 tree is built. All the updates are built. It's all ready to go. I'm going to merge in all the package changes from 3.1 to 3.3 (including centos-release) into the 3.1/updates path. Then when you run yum update you'll be running 3.3. However! If your /etc/yum.conf file does not use $releasever to specify repositories then you won't get any new updates to 3.3. More announcements coming as I have time. Sorry. -sv

CentOS-3 versions 3.2 & 3.3

Hey, I thought I had been paying attention, but I do not know what is going on. On the mirrors, under centos-3, we now have directories named 3.1, 3.2 & 3.3. The CentOS-3 I have been using for some months came from 3.1. The 3.2 directory is dated September 11th and seems to be empty. The 3.3 directory is dated September 16th and has stuff in it, such as rpm's, but no header files for yum. If someone would kindly explain what is going on, I would update the web site with a news item if appropriate. Thanks, Rick

apt repositories

Hi, does anyone have plans on adding an apt repository? I used apt-get with Synaptic RH8 with fedoralegacy.org which made things so much easier to manage compared to yum/up2date. Freshrpms provides some instructions here: http://freshrpms.net/apt/server/ Unfortunately I do not have the bandwidth to offer it myself. btw - does anyone have an idea why up2date says it wants to downgrade after the all the updates completed. posted here: http://caosity.org/pipermail/centos/2004-September/000564.html I hope to get this resolved before rolling out any more Centos machines. thx __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? kernel question

An interesting bug in RHEL 3(which affects CentOS 3) has been bantered around for a while. There are some kernel patches(beyond my scope right now) or some echo statements tht are used(this helped my situation). The newest 2.4.x kernels have these patches incorporated. Would centOS 3 go nuts if i installed the latest kernel from kernel.org? <btw the issue is that the 2.4.xx kernels ahve a tendency to fill up ram with cache..which is normal. The bug is that the kernel then refuses to rlease the cache and instead starts swapping...which i have noticed in my little install here. What i did to fix it as a workaround(noted in the buzilla report here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=89226 is to send the following command at the command line: (echo 1 10 10 >/proc/sys/vm/pagecache) I have noticed this is another RH9 server i ahve access to and will be trying it on that box too as well as my linux firewall.> -- My "Foundation" verse: Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. I have noticed various RHEL linux notices being posted..I know the CentOS people are busy...I was wondering if CentOS 3 will ahve the corresponding updates available in the next week?(trying to be conservative in my question) -- My "Foundation" verse: Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. Is there a novice level way to produce a distro/copy/whatever of an installation so that I can duplicate it on a new box? Is there a hard drive copy application that can copy linux drives? Beth

In regard of the e-mail sent on Jul/16/04 about the 3Ware 9500S. Has anyone experienced/solved this issue ?? I'm having a similar problem, I already have the system installed on a separate disk, now I want to make the filesystem on the RAID partition (using 3Ware 9500S-8). First I had the problem that the card will keep resetting after continous timeouts whenever I tried loading the module (compiled from source, in up-mode, driver v.9.2 from 3Ware's website). The solution to this was to disable APIC on the motherboard (or boot linux without APIC support). So, now the module loads ok (I've tried SMP and ENT versions, I'm using kernel 2.4.21-15.0.4-ELsmp). But the timeout and reset problem start happening again when I try to create the filesystem on the RAID partition. I can cancel the mkfs operation, but then I get a kernel panic if I try to unload the module (rmmod 3w-9xxx), just like the problem that the previous poster had. Any ideas or input would be appreciated. David

Using yum to do downgrades

This is a yum question but relates to some work I am doing with CentOS and other recent discussions on this list so I though I would post here first. Basically I am attempting a Red Hat 7.2 -> CentOS-2 upgrade. So far it has worked like a charm. The problem is though that yum (no doubt by design) will not downgrade packages to the CentOS versions. The problem is that some old RPMs have 72 in the release (for Red Hat 7.2) and the newer package as 21 in the release (For Enterprise Linux 2.1). Some others are updates to 7.2 which increased the version number where as 2.1 got a backported fix and increased release number. Is there a way to make yum always select a particular Vendor or Distribution? What about using yum to do an explicit downgrade "yum install mypackage-version-oldrelease"? Also, this is an rpm question, does anyone know if I can do "rpm --erase redhat-logos" and "rpm -i centos-logos" at the same time? If I put an obsoletes: tag into centos-logos will yum do that for me? Is that a good idea? At the moment I have a bash script which trys to work out the downgrade rpm commands but I can not check dependencies. Any other suggestions, tips or tricks would be appreciated. XF86Setup

Hello. I am looking for the famous XF86Setup command used on RedHat 7.1 (for XFree86) but I didn't find it on CentOS 3.1. Did it change into something else ? Else how can I configure my monitor, mouse, video card settings ? Same questions for starting the hardware material configurator. How can I force it to run ? I know that it runs automatically at boot when we change a card or device, but how to force starting this program manually ? Thanks, Daniel
