Hey, I have two bits of info that suggest this is more of a RedHat problem than a Linux problem: 1) A high school friend had exactly this problem (screen when blank when booting up) on a computer running RedHat 9. (A different monitor had been used to install RedHat 9, and that monitor worked OK. Later, my high school friend got a different monitor, which went blank on boot up.) I solved the problem for my friend by swapping his nVIDIA card for a Voodoo Banshee. (And then I upgraded him to CentOS-3.) 2) I tried doing a Debian X desktop install on my test bench system with the nVIDIA TNT2 card plugged in. Debian's X install is more manual (less automatic) than under CentOS. I had to tell it which driver to use ("nv"), which I found by looking it up via Google. Debian could not get X to load -- after the screen flashed several times, Debian gave up and dumped me onto a text prompt with some messages on the screen. Maybe it is fair to say that it is a Linux problem, which RedHat 9 and its descendants do not handle well. Rick

Fastrak TX2000 & CentOS 3.3

Trying to install FastTrak TX2000 in box with CentOS 3.3 (kernal 2.4.21-20.EL.c0) install. Just downloaded Redhat 8/9 driver from Promise. But "sh install" says correct driver not found on diskette. Any suggestions? Thaks

yum updated to 3.3, rpmdb corrupted

I'd guess this is probably something pretty specific to my test box, but when I yum updated to 3.3 my rpmdb got totally hosed. Unfortunately, I didn't save the error that occured at the time because a rpm --rebuilddb _appeared_ to fix the problem. Unfortunately I found out later that I was left with a db that only contained a subset of the actual install base. I'm now trying to recover from the /var/log/rpmpkgs file. Later I will be adding /var/lib/rpm to my backups.... In addition to me, two people have written to the group recently about the nVIDIA problem. They can vouch for the fact that there is sometimes a problem. I agree that nVIDIA cards work for many people (including for me, which I also wrote). But the fact that they work for many people does not solve the problem when one does not work with a specific monitor. This topic is near and dear to my heart, as I first encountered the problem when I was trying to install CentOS on machine with an nVIDIA card and using a monitor with which nVIDIA cards do not work (my Mag DX1495). At the beginning, I did not know that the card was the problem, I only knew that the screen went blank toward the end of the install. In addition to trying to solve the problem by tweeking the XF86Config file (boy, was that futile!), it literally took me hours of parts swapping, distribution swapping, and OS swapping (trying Windows too), to finally figure out that the nVIDIA card was the problem. (Some might say that the card/monitor combination was the problem, but Windows has no problem with the combination.) I've found this ftp server to be the easiest and most secure to set-up for Redhat systems. Go to: http://www.pureftpd.org/ The Redhat binary (rpm) version can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.pureftpd.org/pub/pure-ftpd/releases/binaries/redhat/ You'll probably want the "i686" version. Install the rpm package (you'll need to be root to do this): # rpm -Uvh pure-ftpd-1.0.19-1.i686.rpm And that's it. (rpm -q vsftpd) If it's not, it'll be on your install media or can easily be acquired with "yum -y install vsftpd" Then do "service vsftpd start" to start the FTP server. Are you just trying to prove the concept today, or do you need your user to be able to upload files to the document root right now? If the former, simply create a new user account and set a password for it. The vsftpd server will immediately allow logins to the users' home directory with their username/password. Any files placed in public_html/ in a home directory should be automatically mapped by apache to httpd://[server.dom.ain]/~[userid]/. I have never had the problem of a monitor not being detected, though if you have tv out and no monitor plugged in then tv out will be used when the machine is powered on. I have an RPM which I wrote which rebuilds the driver (if necessary) and loads it at boot time. Someone already suggested that you use scp/ssh which is what I would recommend. There is a decent windows program called winscp which is similar to windows ftp programs. There is also a command line tool from putty called pscp. When it comes to NAT, you need to look at both the internal and external networks separately. Firstly, assuming you want the external network (The internet) to connect to your web server, you need to allow port 80. If you want the external network to talk to your ssh server (for scp) then you need port 22 as well. If ssh is only for internal then you don't need to worry about NAT. Also (AFAIK) if you are using NAT then there should be a 1 to 1 mapping from internal to external IP addresses, in which case it is quite likely that all ports are translated and forwarded anyway. If you mean you have a 1 to many (Only one IP on the internet) then you need to nominate which IP of the many to forward connections to (port forwarding). None of this has anything to do with a command line and everything to do with reading the manuals/FAQs/HOWTOs etc. John. Everything on the two machines this has happened on is rpm'd pretty much all of it sourced from centos or dag. Yeah, the only reason I deleted them is because googling suggested it was worth doing before a rebuilddb. I've been Googling on this all day, installing GPG Keys, and trying different yum configurations. I noticed a similar question in the list a couple of months ago about going from RHEL to Centos-3, but the answer wasn't definitive. Has anyone done this? Can this be done? Can it be done with yum? If so, how? When I 'yum update' I get /usr/bin/yum, yummain.main, yummain.py, clientStuff.py errors, and a "ValueError: unpack list of wrong size" error. Would definitely appreciate any direction. System = CentOS / Apache 2.0 / HTML files location = /var/www/html Nat'd IP - ports 80, 20, 21 already opened & routed to internal ip. I desperately need the quick & dirty solution. I need a setup where one user can ftp from another desktop (windows) to upload new website files. I currently have CuteFTP, but will use anything needed at this point. I need to try to test this today. VERY new to linux, I am completely bogged down trying to learn command-line syntax. Thanks in advance, Beth

The best thing about this approach is that the driver will be recompiled when the machine is rebooted with a new kernel. There is an updated redhat-config-nfs package for CentOS 3.3 (and added to 3.1) https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2004-434.html refers Updated file is :- redhat-config-nfs-1.0.13-6.noarch.rpm in updates/i386/RPMS/ This is available at http://mirror.centos.org/3.1/ and should be on all mirrors within a few hours. To update to the latest version 'yum update redhat-config-nfs' should be sufficient.
