yum update in background

greetings, is it a proper way and/or good idea to perform a yum update in the background like this? yum -y update & at this moment, i do not have as reliable of an "wireless access connection" to the remote server machine at the data center as i would like and i want to take this one box from 4.1 to latest 4.2 comments please? thanks! - rh -- Robert Hanson - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services www.abbacomm.net

Availability of unsupported kernel for 4.2 or compiling reiser into 4.2 kernel

Two related questions. 1. When is the unsupported version of 2.6.9.22 likely to be available? I need to access reiser filesystems so Im currently running on the .11unsupported kernel. 2. Has anyone successfully compiled reiser into the 2.6.9.22 kernel? I am getting errors in stree.c but I cant find a solution on the net? Thanks Daveh

I'm trying to build driver for hpt374 raid controler on a new installation of contOS 4.2 followin the instroctions in this thread http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&order=DESC&… It says that I should run "yum install kernel-sourcecode" to get the files I need and it will create the path /usr/src/linux-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL which is needed. rebuilding mod_perl

If I say 'yum install mod_perl', on my CentOS-3 system, I get one built to work with the system's stock perl 5.8.0. I have built perl 5.8.7 and installed it in /usr/local/perl-5.8.7. How can I get the src rpm for mod_perl and build it against the newer perl? -- -ste

lvm over software raid error

Came across a strange problem, I have a software raid1 with LV sitting on top. RAID6 in production?

Is anyone using RAID6 in production? In moving from hardware RAID on my dual 3ware 7500-8 based systems to md, I decided I'd like to go with RAID6 (since md is less tolerant of marginal drives than is 3ware). I did some benchmarking and was getting decent speeds with a 128KiB chunksize. So the next step was failure testing. Can't install CentOS4

Hi everyone, My email server is running CentOS 3 and I can't upgrade it to CentOS 4 using the CD's. At first I thought it was the old Megaraid card (that's no longer supported), so I replaced that with a new card. I've tried ISO's from CentOS 4, 4.1 and now 4.2 which I've tested and booted in other machines. Just not this one. Update 4.2 broke LVM

I upgrade using YUM my CentOS 4 system the other night. I was noticing that X wasn't coming up because of a gdk_thread issue (actually, the window manager wasn't starting. I cold get X to start from the command line). Surprised that it took 587MB of downloads, since I was current as of September 29th.
