UPS tool ?

Hi all, I plan to upgrade some servers running good old RH7.2/7.3. Some of these machines' got UPS an I use nut to monitor them. I was very surprised to see that nut isn't included in RHEL 4.x (quite weird for an enterprise class distro). Is there any program I may use as a replacement for nut ? Or do I have to compile it by myself (I saw a nut SRPM was available for Fedora Core 4 so I guess it won't be hard to adapt it to CentOS 4.x). Thanks for your replies. Gilles.

X/gnome/KDE app that will scroll message across desktop

Is there a "built in" application for X/gnome/KDE that given a text string scroll it across the desktop? a command line program that did this would be exactly what I'm looking for. Is there anything like this? THanks, Jerry

Strange soundcard problem w/4.2

Hi there, I'm trying to repurpose an unused machine (athlon XP 3000+) for my young daughter to use. It's on a motherboard with a VIA KT880 chipset and VIA integrated soundcard (VIA 8237). The card seems to be detected during boot time and shows up in the system log, but when I try to actually use the sound card within Gnome, there's no sound. The device is detected, but there's no sound. So I figured this may be an "oddball" chipset, so I disabled the onboard sound device and installed a vanilla Soundblaster Live! card. Again, the card seems to be detected by the kernel at boot time, but there's no sound and the soundcard detection utility reports "no sound card detected." Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since my daughter is now camped at my expensive laptop so she can play tux racer (a great game for kids, BTW). :-) Cheers,

Exim on all interfaces

Hi. I have a default installation of Exim with only a few changed settings. It appears to only bind to the loopback interface. I have not set any local_interfaces values, as the default behaviour is to bind on all interfaces. CentOS 4.2 and VMWare

Has anyone successfully installed CentOS 4.2 within VMWare 5 and have it run successfully. I tried doing this last night, but after the install, it cannot boot. It hangs at the GRUB message. I have used CentOS 4.1 many times within VMWare without problems. I did a search and found some where people have had this problem, but not within VMWare. The problems seem to have been related to SCSI devices. I know VMWare allows you to choose between two types of SCSI interfaces, but I chose the default presented (for RedHat Enterprise 4). Maybe I need to use a different VM configuration? Derek

apt repository

a gotcha with cron and 4.2

the new cron in 4.2 activates the pam access module. if you have been using that to control ssh access or other things, now suddently cron is going to use it as well. this only seems to affect user crontabs and crontabs in /etc/cron.d. from some digging around i was able to determine that cron sets the tty to 'cron', so you can just add a line like: +:ALL:cron to /etc/security/access.conf and it will enable those cron jobs again. Apache won't start, semaphores exhausted

One of our systems run Apache 2.0.52 (httpd-2.0.52-12.2.ent.centos4 rpm). The kernel we're running is 2.6.9-11.ELsmp. After a few weeks of uptime, Apache refuses to start with the following error in error.log: [crit] (28)No space left on device: mod_jk: could not create jk_log_lock With Apache not running, there're a lot of semaphores left behind by Apache, e.g.: ------ Semaphore Arrays -------- key semid owner perms nsems 0x00000000 98304 root 600 1 0x00000000 131073 apache 600 1 0x00000000 163842 apache 600 1 0x00000000 196611 apache 600 1 0x00000000 229380 apache 600 1 0x00000000 786437 root 600 1 ... ... ... /proc/sys/kernel/sem has the following settings: 250 32000 32 128 Is this an Apache issue or is this a kernel issue? SCSI schizophrenia

OK - I only have one tape drive but a real problem these days backing up.
