How CentOS Mirrors Work

Can someone tell me how the mirroring process works? Like, is any portion of bandwidth useful, or should something like a full T-1 be considered a minimum useful addition? I guess I'm wondering if when I'm doing updates, when one RPM is coming in, if it is coming in from one mirror server at a time or if it is a cumulative situation? So, like would an additional 50k capped connection would be helpful or just be a slow update connection? Best, John Hinton

The CentOS development team is pleased to announce the availability of CentOS-4.2 in the following architectures: i386 - This distribution supports AMD (K6, K7, Thunderbird, Athlon, Athlon XP, Sempron), Pentium (Classic, Pro, II, III, 4, Celeron, M, Xeon), VIA (C3, Eden, Luke, C7) processors. x86_64 - This distribution supports AMD (Athlon 64, Opteron) and Intel Pentium (Xeon EM64T) processors. ia64 - This distribution supports Intel Itanium2 processors. s390 - This distribution supports IBM S/390 processors. s390x - This distribution supports IBM Z-Series servers. alpha - This distribution supports the DEC Alpha processor. CentOS-4.2 contains a technology preview release of SystemTap. SystemTap is a dynamic system profiling framework. DoS Attack

Yesterday, I had a DoS attack on a php/mysql webpage which uses a lot of resources. I have learned today, as a for instance, in the last hour, about 3000 requests for that page were made by 610 different servers, mostly from 'odd' places... China, Russia, Poland, Turkey... the usual suspects from my experience. The bottom line is this... I hit server loads of 142 yesterday!!! And the server never crashed! Yeah, it might as well have been dead, but it wasn't. Yes, some things shut down temporarily... but the machine never went down. This is a remote server, about an hour away.. It took about 20 minutes for my mysqld stop command to execute, but with time it did respond! I'm extremely impressed by this and just wanted to pass this 'trivia' along. EL rocks! Best, John Hinton

rpmbuild a kernel module

We've been down this path before and I got things working but am not self-sufficient which is where I would like to be. Problem is new kernel 2.6.9-22 and I need 2 modules installed that aren't part of the RHEL kernels. 1 - megaraid for older non-supported megaraid cards. I have the source and can compile the modules and make them work no problem. We have archives in the mail list for that. 2 - appletalk - previously, it was suggested that I get the module from esmith which I did and it has worked fine but they have yet to update to the new kernel (which they will undoubtedly do). I found the unclutter package for mandrake. works nice. All, I am looking for a command to hide the mouse on X or move it to the side of the screen. Is there such a command? THanks Jerry
