New XFS Code for CentOS-4

All, I just submitting this information to the CentOS-Devel list. I want to also include it here in case there are people who want to use XFS on the standard CentOS kernel. DO NOT EXPECT THIS TO BE PRODUCTION GRADE :) ... it is a TESTING release (For those of you who are tracking beta code ... this is pre-beta, and use at your own risk) If it breaks, you get to keep all the pieces because I don't want any of them. http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2005-November/000926.html PS ... only root can use xwindows

After testing runlevel 5 i noticed that I cant switch to text consoles. So I went back to runlevel 3, but now normal users cant use graphic environment. I just got a black screen and an error message: Xlib: connection refused by server, Protocol unsupported by server root can start xfce normally. Any idea about whats happenning? -- Roger D. I now have to mention Emacs with AucTeX. ;-) I generally grab the latest AucTeX SRPM from Fedora Core (i.e., from Rawhide) and build it locally. Or else get the real source [0] and build that. The latest and greatest AucTeX incorporates preview-latex, which ``typesets'' some mathematical stuff for you and displays it in your document. I'm not that excited by that behavior, but you might like it. I also install Kile, a full-blown GUI editor, for folks here to use. It's a KDE program and is a lot like WinEDT. Kile seems to be reasonably nice if you like that sort of thing. Here's another data point regarding the GDM problem I'm having. Once again, I get this on the console: There was an error loading the theme Default Couldn't recognize the image file format for file '/usr/share/gdm/themes/Default/background.png' Yesterday I needed to edit some graphics I had done for a job. I use gimp. Now gimp tells me: Image type 'png' is not supported Soooo ... the problem appears to be with png support and not with GDM at all. Bonding in CentOS3 vs. CentOS4

I am able to bring up a bonded NIC in Centos4 without requiring to bring up the bond0 with an ip address, but with CentOS-3 I must assign the NIC an address or eth0 and eth1 will not slave. I need to bring bond0 up without an ip address becuase I will be using tagged VLANs. ie. <snip /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0> DEVICE=bond0 BOOTPROTO=none ONBOOT=yes IPADDR=169.254.0.1 USERCTL=no </snip> I can later manually do something like the following from a post network script, but I am wondering why this is different in CentOS-4. ifconfig bond0 0.0.0.0 ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 ifconfig eth1 0.0.0.0 if I change the ifcfg-bond0 to not have an ip address. ie. <snip /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0> DEVICE=bond0 BOOTPROTO=none ONBOOT=yes #IPADDR=169.254.0.1 USERCTL=no </snip> Then when I restart the network neither eth0 or eth1 are enslaved.

Usually I am in the position of supplicant and I have found the people on this list generally as helpful and usually as well informed as other lists that I frequent. But I am concerned about the general tenor of some of the discussions here and how these may lead to ill-feeling in some and a disinclination to actively participate in others. We are all infinitely ignorant, it is just that some of us possess a predisposition to stay within that which we find familiar and others find it easier to take adventures. Neither tendency is good or bad, they are just personal preferences. It would be more comfortable for the list membership, and improve the decorum of the messages considerably, if people from one camp or the other, and the many of us that straddle both albeit on different issues, displayed a willingness to accommodate the other side and recognize that there are many important reasons, not all of which we may agree with, why someone chooses to do things a certain way. Complaining about people's email habits, particularly in public, where the content is not the issue strikes me as pointless, self- indulgent in the extreme, and reflects most poorly on the personality of the complainant. HSBC Banking

Hi, This is a long shot, but does anyone have HSBC Internet banking working with Centos-4? Various fragments on other lists suggests that it works with Konqueror but not for me. :-( Thanks Rob

Scsi drive monitor

Hello Has anyone successfully loaded a disk monitoring tool for a HP lp100r, running centos 3.6, in a raid 5 configuration, created using the HP 1M raid card? The old Top Tools from HP no longer work with this kernel version. RHEL3 --> CentOS3 HP proliant 380

Hi, I've got a HP 380 G2 which is running RHEL AS 3 Taroon update 1. The current smp kernel 2.4.21-9smp is booting with a HPinitrd image. Mostlikely generated with the HP proliant Service Pack for RHEL 3. Now if I migrate this system to CentOS 3 and a new kernel will be installed ,will that work ? Does the new centOS kernel use the same config as the current RHEL kernel ? Anyone done this before ? I don't have access to the console so can't take too much risk here.. thanks, Peter
