compaq v2000 laptop -- realtek RTL8100C?

They only have linux drivers showing for kernel 2.4.X Should I try that since my kernel is 2.6.X? Jerry

I found that by looking through the 'rc' script not long after I posted. I finally determined that the script was properly creating and deleting the lock file, it was just named wrong. The lock file must be named either 'subsys' or 'subsys.init'. This one was trying to use 'subsys-init'. Changed the dash to a period and the problem went away. Thanks for the help! -- Bowie

compaq v2000 laptop

Hi, I have a compaq V2000 laptop. Specs for network say its a realtek 8139/8139C+ NIC. Other distros (namely suse) said there was no problem with this was detected and worked. Mine does not work on either of the 2 V2000 laptops I have. I tried manually loading the 8139cp module then restarting the network and that did not do it. Any ideas? Jerry

use chkconfig to change service startup order

Hi, I have my httpd process that starts in runlevel3 with the following info # chkconfig: - 85 15 # description: Apache is a World Wide Web server. It is used to serve \ # HTML files and CGI. # processname: httpd # pidfile: /var/run/httpd.pid # config: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf the filename is /etc/rc.3.d/K15httpd However I installed an antivirus that uses a tomcat process that *must* be started prior to apache. the antivirus has the filename /etc/rc3.d/S99ISproxy How can I make the httpd start *after* the S99ISproxy process? Setting up software IDE RAID

I have some old rack boxes which are going to get some bigger harddrives (IDE/ATA, not SATA) in Spring and I'm wondering if I should put two disks in them and use them as RAID 1 (software RAID). Objective being that the machine can hopefully carry on after (one) disk failure (including rebooting). I don't have any experience with software RAID. Can I do this during the normal CentOS (4) setup or can I even do this later (when there's only one disk and I add another one)? Does it make a difference performance-wise? (slight drop?) Is it reliable, so that it will fulfill on the purpose or should I better forget it? (Replacing the mainboards or adding RAID controller cards is out of the question.) I'm certainly willing to read a How-To or other documentation, but since it's completely new to me I'm not really sure where to start searching. Kai -- Kai Schätzl, Berlin, Germany

Shutdown script not being run

I've got an odd problem. My server will not shutdown normally because the AoE driver is not being shut down properly. While investigating the problem, I found that the aoe script is apparently not being called for shutdown. I have been able to duplicate this with a brand new test script. My test script is just a simple file that echos back the start or stop command: #!/bin/bash # # chkconfig: 45 01 99 # description: Test Start and stop script # echo "Called with $1" I installed it with 'chkconfig --add mytest'. The softlinks exist in the runlevel directories: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mytest /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K99mytest /etc/rc.d/rc1.d/K99mytest /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/K99mytest /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/K99mytest /etc/rc.d/rc4.d/S01mytest /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S01mytest /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K99mytest When I 'telinit 4', I can see the script output in /var/log/messages: Dec 19 11:46:49 bnofdn1 mytest: Called with start Dec 19 11:46:49 bnofdn1 rc: Starting mytest: succeeded When I 'telinit 3', there is no output from this script. It is like the script is not even being called. Am I doing something stupid here? When I do 'telinit 3' from a higher runlevel, isn't it supposed to run all of the 'K*' scripts in rc3.d with a 'stop' argument? Any suggestions would be appreciated. -- Bowie

Installing CentOS via HTTP

When, after starting the install, you get a list of places for the distribution, listing things like: CDrom, NFS, FTP, HTTP, Local hard drive What is expected on the HTTP url? The ISO images? Help please, as the system I am installing on, boots off of CDrom, but then the CDrom seems to be so old (Toshiba NW24XCD), that there is no Linux driver for it in the base install. And I cannot figure out how to get it to read from the CD, but I DO have LAN access....

DELL SC430 + CentOS 4.0 + SATA HDDs

Dear gurus, Three DELL SC430s were purchased by my company a few months back and I've been told that when they spoke with the DELL representatives, they were informed that these servers were fully RHEL 4.0 compatible. Specs of the servers:- - Pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz - 1 GB RAM - 2x 250GB SATA HDDs I tried installing CentOS 4.0 on it but it doesn't seem to be able to detect any hard disks. Has anyone out there successfully installed CentOS 4.0 on a Dell SC430? Please help. Your guidance is greatly appreciated. TIA, Andrew

To do a HTTP install you need a mounted ISO image. What we have set up here is a yam repository to do all our updating plus installations. http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/yam/ It works great for us and cuts down on internet traffic. Our yam box syncs off a centos mirror and we pull all our updates from the local repository. Belkin F5D6050 USB Wireless in CentOS 4.2

Is anyone successfully using a Belkin F5D6050 USB Wireless in CentOS 4.2? If so, what driver are you using? Did you have to do anything special to make it work? At this point, I have downloaded, compiled installed and loaded the latest drivers from http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net but lvnet is unable to find my adapter. I've tried every driver module that it created, and still no luck. Any tips, info or hints would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry
