compaq r4000 32 bit and 64 bit install

after booting a CentOS 4.2 system I have a bunch of zombies... root 2828 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 14:41 0:00 [chvt] <defunct> My read from googling this is chvt stems from something that involves a shell. They ***may*** have been created from my attempts to start mysqld which isn't working (I will start another thread) but no efforts to kill them off are working... [root@srv1 certs]# kill 2828 [root@srv1 certs]# kill -9 2828 [root@srv1 certs]# ps aux|grep 2828 root 2828 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 14:41 0:00 [chvt] <defunct> How do I clean this up? Craig

Kernel Panic - Not synching Machine Check

This server was running fedora core 2 till 12/2/2005. It had an impressive uptime of 180 days or so. On friday I upgraded to CentOS 4.2. After upgrading to CentOS 4.2 this server has been throwing kernel panics every 10 hours or so. These are some of the error messages I am getting on the console: "CPU 0:Machine check exception :4 Bank 0 : f672100000000833 TSC 112180365ccf ADDR e2c7f7c0 Kernel Panic - Not synching Machine Check" This is a production server. I would appreciate any help. S

Hi I have a compaq R4000 with the 2.4GIG AMD 64 bit. 4000+ rated. proc cpuinfo reports cpu Mhz as 997.481 Do I have to run the 64 bit version to have things run correctly? I just have the normal 4.2 loaded at this time. The laptop seems slow for 4000+ as reflected by the cpu Mhz also. Any thoughts on running the 32 bit version of 4.2 vs the 64 bit version of 4.2? See AMD "Cool'n'Quiet" which reduces the CPU speed when not under load (and/or on 'niced' processes). You can disable the cpuspeed init to make it always run at the maximum speed.
