yum upgrade on 3.4 and spamassassin

Hello, I run CentOS 3.4 on 3 machines (i386). Original yum.conf If I do a yum update: No actions to take If I do a yum upgrade a machine that has no spamassassin: No actions to take If I do a yum upgrade on 2 machines that have perl-Mail-SpamAssassin-3.0.1-1 installed (3rd party rpm, more recent than the CentOS/RHEL one): I will do the following: [update: spamassassin 2.55-3.4.i386] I will install/upgrade these to satisfy the dependencies: [deps: perl-Time-HiRes 1.38-3.i386] Is this ok [y/N]: Could someone please explain this behavior? Why is yum upgrade trying to upgrade a package that is a newer 3rd party rpm, with a different name? Thanks, Francois

Yes, we use it for exactly that. It really does work well, removing nearly all spam and virus scanning with multiple virus engines. Dean

Mailscanner and Postfix

I have just followed Johnny Hughes' excellent walk-through on how to install Postfix, MailScanner with ClamAV and Spamassassin and it seems to be running fine during in house testing, but I want to make sure that it behaves itself when it goes live serving about 250 users; I have read comments elsewhere both for and against the use of Mailscanner with Postfix, and when I mentioned the subject on the Postfix group I was informed I *WILL* have mail dupes and missing mail so can I have some observations from people using this setup with Centos (3.3). Also, is there a good follow up to JH's article about using that configuration with virtual mailboxes or is it easy to take the setup as outlined and 'convert' it to use them? I'm on a steep learning curve as I pull myself away from the M$ camp! Thanks

Sorry, I can not comment on Postfix as I use sendmail with MailScanner but from what I read on the MailScanner mailing list there are lots of people running a huge amount of mail through it with Postfix. Official Announce List Notification

As you will know from recent posts, CentOS is separating from cAos to become an independent project. As part of that change we are implementing new mailing lists. The new Announce List is now active. All Errata, release announcements and the like will only be posted to the announce list. Once a day, a digest of the Announce List will be posted to the main CentOS list. Ryan, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by ``editing'', but if you mean ``adding'' and ``removing'' entries, I found ``Editing GNOME2 Menus in Red Hat Linux 8.0 and 9'', at <http://www.bluethingy.com/linux/rh8menu.html> to be pretty helpful in understanding how this stuff works. It seems like the information in that article applies to CentOS 3 (and, presumably, also to CentOS 4). (Yes, I happened to be tinkering with the menu stuff when I saw your message.) RHEL Un question

Please excuse my ignorance, since I have not used any RedHat (enterprise or otherwise) until Fedora FC3 (a few weeks) and now CentOS4 (permanently). I keep finding references to Un (I believe it's up to U5 now) in references to bugfixes, etc for RHEL. I presume (?) these are dot releases after the initial release? Is there anything equivalent for CentOS, or is this RedHat only behavior? editing gnome menu

Is there any easy way to edit the gnome menu under CentOS 4? The same versions of gnome under different distros allow easy (to different degrees) of menu editing.
