I downloaded and installed apt and synaptic using yum ok, but are there corresponding apt repo's for the yum ones? Centos 3.4 3ware 9500S Floppy Boot Disk

We have created a Centos 9500S Floppy Boot Disk for installing Centos on a 3ware 9500S series controller that will allow installing and booting directly from this controller. This boot disk supports only AMD XP, MP and Opterons in 32 bit mode Centos 3.4 for the up and smp versions. We can also do a x86_64 version if required. Any interest???? If so we will post it to our web site. This problem also exhibits in RHEL3-U4, so CentOS 3.4 inherited it. CentOS 3.4 is treated as rhas3 by xcat. The first time you run 'nodeset <host> install' for a particular OS, the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch> tree gets populated with files, including install.gz, which is a compressed disk image which in turn contains all the kernel modules, including tg3. 1.) First thing you need to do is delete (or rename) the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch>/ directory. 2.) Next is to fix a minor bug in xcat's 'mkinstall' located in $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/bin/. I posted the fix to the xcat user's list, and have included the hacked mkinstall as an attachment. Please note that this mkinstall is for 'x86', but it should be pretty straightforward to see how to make the change for x86_64 if that's your arch. << cut&paste'd from my post in the xcat user's list >> I went the second route and dug around inside $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/bin/mkinstall. Turns out that there is a fix already inside this script and a module already built, but that it only will be applied to RHEL3-U4 and not CentOS 3.4 It's because of the file test at line 375 of mkinstall: the version string in the kernel rpm that ships on the RHEL3-U4 cd's is 2.4.21-27, but the CentOS-3.4 kernel version string is 2.4.21-27.0.1. Because there is not an install.gz in the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch> directory, it will be built, and because you're in the $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/ directory, the pre-built bcm5700.o module which lives in $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/data/27.EL will get put into the install.gz as tg3.o. 5.) Jabberd and Centos 3.4

I am trying to setup a local Jabberd server for our members of our IT department to use. I downloaded the source for 2.0s8 from the jabbered site. When i run ./configure I receive the following error: "configure: error: Libidn >= 0.3.0 not found" I went out to dag and downloaded and installed the libidn-0.4.6-1.1.el3.dag rpm. When i ran ./configure again it failed again. After a little searching on Google I found the following article: http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/jadmin/2004-June/016435.html Following its advice I rand ./configure --with-extra-library-path=/usr/lib/libidn.so.11. However it still fails. Anyone have any ideas? I don't know anything about libidn, is 0.4.6 incompatible with versions needing 0.3.0? There are several ways of getting around that from simplest to hardest -- - Add '/sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD' to /etc/rc.local - Add '/sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD ${DEVICE}' to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-post - research your card driver and add the appropriate arguments in /etc/modules.conf. I almost always opt for the first option. As has been previously noted, you must make sure that the switch, hub or router that you are connected to is also forced to the same speed and duplex. -- Marc

Just an update to this... I upgraded the firmware on the SCSI RAID controller to version 413O-A09 as found at this link: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s= bsd&SystemID=PWE_PNT_XEO_1750&os=LE30&osl=en&deviceid=2608&devlib=35&cat egory=35&releaseid=R85295 Since upgrading the firmware we have had no more kernel panic problems. Thanks to everyone for your help, and thanks to Johnny Hughes for providing the easy links to the firmware. Bob.

CentOS 4, booting into gnome I noticed the line "starting the red-hat network monitor" flash up. I do not know if this is a no-no or not.

The Vino package is installed on my CentOS 4 server, but I am unable to connect to it using vncviewer (vncviewer srvhost:0) from a client. However, I am not sure if it is "running" or how to "start" it if this is needed. The client machine in this case is running Ubuntu Hoary (gnome 2.10). The connection is just rejected. So, I am now wondering what else needs to be done to enable remote connects to succeed. I did configure the "remote desktop" settings on the server per discussion in the thread. I am on trusted network and have the firewall support turned off on both machines. I would just use the standard Xvnc and "vncviewer hostname:1", which does work, but when I login via vncviewer I am unable to do any root configuration via gnome. In other distros, I have not had this problem. I run my file server without a monitor, so I need full access to root settings from gnome just like I have when logged in non-root using a monitor and keyboard.
