Max FIFO buffer size - Log Reporting

Hi Everyone, I need to be able to create a summary report of all relevent syslog entries that is then emailed weekly. The idea I have for this is to pipe the syslog entries (logged from many hosts UNIX-Like and Windows) out to a a named pipe (say /var/log/logpipe) that is then read periodically by a perl script started from cron. The perl script then filters the log entries (probably using regular expressions) and takes the appopriate action based on the severity of the error (i.e. log to summary file, or immediately email admin). My main concern is that if a lot of entries get logged the FIFO buffer may overload therefore loosing entries. Does anyone know what the size of the FIFO buffer is (or how it can be configured) or maybe there is a better way to do something like what I'm trying. TIA Regards Lee W

using vino on centos 4

sorry i figured this out after deleting the other parts of the thread. just run vino-preferences as the user who runs the main x display. it will have various options to enable and as soon as you do that you can get to hostname:0 via vnc. works quite well.

MIrrored drives won't boot after installation

I have a p4 motherboard with 2 ide interfaces, I connect 2 40 GB drives as hda and hdc, I install Centos 4 from a CDROM, and partition the drives as 2 x raid partition each plus a swap partition on hda, the make md0 and md1 to install /boot and / respectively. Install goes well, everything looks great, go to reboot from drives, and all I get is "grub" but no boot. I have tried this ten times, doesn't seem I can get around it. I have to configure this server so that the drives are mirrored. I have installed redhat 9 in this configuration without problems. What am I doing wrong? Chris Mason www.anguillaguide.com

Firefox question

Just curious. I've noticed with the 1.0.3 release (and almost every recent dot release) Firefox becomes unstable until you preserve your bookmarks and blow away the .mozilla/firefox directory. A 'simple' problem?

Here's one for you if you have the time: I very stupidly killed the wrong process on a server on a remote site on Friday and now I cannot ssh login to it! It's not a major problem as it's main functions are as a file and print sharer (samba) and to run postfix/mailscanner, and I can have someone on site reboot the server when they start work on Monday, but I was wondering whether I could 'get in' by other means to reboot it - so far I have tried the following without luck: Simultaneous login requests to 'reach' a listening login as I think I've only screwed up pts0 A VNC connection to a machine on site and then using telnet (nope, telnet disabled) A VNC connection to a machine on site and then a VNC connection to the server (VNC not running on this one). Any suggestions to issue a remote reboot - as I said, it's not a major issue as I can have the server rebooted by someone on site. Thanks Nigel Kendrick
