formatting a 3 terabyte partition

hi. i'm hitting a wall each time i try to format a 3 terabyte partition. i'm able to create the partition using parted but whenever i try to create a 3 terabyte xfs or jfs or ext3 filesystem, the mounted filesystem created is only 1 terabyte. i tried centos x86 and x86_64 4.0 but i always hit a 1 terabyte limit. please help.

Hello A few (or a lot) of us supports larger corporate networks. I would like know your opinion/solution based on CentOS. No Win auto/dynamic/smart (WI|D)NS/DHCP How do you manage DNS&DHCP (the informations filled in, not the server software) for hundreds or thousands of computers? For our network, just now we use homebrewed scripts, but they are getting unsufficient (cca. 700 machines). how can I manage multiple repositories with yum.

I recently moved away from apt, becuase I could not make it work with multiple x86_64, because there are many duplicate packages from both rchitectures that get installed, and I could not make apt-get work. Someone suggested that I try yum, which does work, but I am having a heck of a time managing multiple repositories. It was easy with apt, being able to pin priorities to repositories and packages, but I cannot make yum work as nicely with pinning. I can exclude and such but most of the time it does not work. I wish I could go back to apt while using x86_64. If anyone has got any tips for either getting apt to work with multiple architectures, or pinning with yum please let me know.

recompile 1 kernel modules

Sir, After looking closely the 8250.c is not a module. It is compiled into the kernel. What is the shortes method to compile that file and rebuild what is needed to get it running. x86_64 duplicate packages problem with apt

I installed Centos3.4-x86_64 and I notice that I get duplicate packages. i.e. I also notice that the duplate packages exist on the cd install as well. [root@bayamo RPMS]# rpm -qa | grep pam_krb pam_krb5-1.73-1 pam_krb5-1.73-1 when I use apt after downloading from Dag's site it complains about duplicate packages after running apt-get update. I am missing something to get my x86_64 system to update with apt the same way i386 system does, Mebbe someone can provide a hint.

centos' current release versions?

hi, what is the current release versions for centos? it seems to a trivial question although: - centos/3 -> 3.4 why not to 3.5? - centos/4 -> 4.0 why not to 4.1? on the other hand # rpm -q centos-release centos-release-4-1.2 why not centos-release-4.1-2? in the current case we can't write in yum's repo file we can't write: .../centos/$releasever/os/$basearch/ since $releasever is 4 and not 4.1 (or 4.0) so we have to lean on the symlink which currently point to an older version. but even if it's point to the right version imho it'd be better if $releasever should be 4.1 rather then 4. just my 2c. yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

You _can_ boot/install on the chipset with the FC2+/RHEL4 installer without issue. You do _not_ need to load the nForce drivers at all! They only contain the _legacy_ OSS (pre-ALSA) sound driver and the "nvnet" which really isn't needed with current "forcedeth" quality. This _includes_ SATA drives on the SATA channels that use the "nv_sata" driver, which is in the stock kernel now. On FC1/RHEL3, you might run into some NIC driver issues, and I want to say most definitely SATA support issues. You'll want to either upgrade the kernel to a late 2.4.23+, or use the nForce driver back with the "nvnet" and "nv_sata" drivers, possibly the "nvsound" OSS driver if you are not going to use ALSA. - The Technical Facts of the nForce4/Pro-series ... The nVidia nForce4/Ultra/SLI, 2200 (Pro) and 2050 (Pro, optional) are all legacy interconnect compatible. The PCI-Express (PCIe), PCI-X and PCI peripherial (I/O) interconnects all appear as traditional PCI logic/ busses, and the HyperTransport system interconnect is transparent thanx to its full Intel APIC/I2O compatibility. Yes, _all_ 40 PCIe and _both_ 2 PCI-X channels in the 2200+2050 combination. ;-> The peripherials on the chipsets are well supported with earlier nForce logic as of kernel 2.4.23+ and kernel 2.6.5+. nVidia has released GPL drivers for _all_ peripherals and components, including modifications to various i810 components, and the ALSA drivers work well for the common DSP/audio combinations. Intel has loosened the IP requirements on nVidia on the AGPgart, so I noticed some work has gone into more recent kernels. In fact, nVidia now uses the AGPgart in the kernel by default in its drivers. I still recommend the nVidia Standardware libGL/GLX drivers for production use _but_ stick with the 1.0-6xxx series _until_ 1.0-7xxx mature. And as I mentioned before, the "nvnet" driver is pretty optional now, and the 10/100 works _flawlessly_ with GPL "forcedeth," and the nVidia contributions in newer kernels seem to work well for 1000Mbps too. In FC2, I had installed both Firefox and Thunderbird from Mozilla.org. They were not "resident" as part of the distro. With CentOS4, they are "standard" features. After I adjusted "Preferred Applications" applet to accommodate the change of locations, all started working properly. Thanks for allowing me to take up space and bandwidth. IP Problems - Address won't stick on reboots!

Centos 4.0 P4 Dual Xeon 2gig Ram One 100mb NIC The problem is that the nic won't hold a fixed IP address. What I mean is that if I refresh it, after booting up by typing "ifdown eth0" and then "ifup eth0" - it then reflects the correct IP address. However, it won't 'have' and IP address upon boot. Also, it seems to hang on the logger service starting up. It sits there attempting to start logger for like 3-4 minutes (timed!). I suspect this problem is most likely related to the IP problem. I've tried moving the network connection to a dedicated HUB and still no luck. What is the correct config file to edit to set the IP address correctly? I tried editing the one in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts - but that didn't fix my problem. Thanks. Scott

What I mean is that if I refresh it, after booting up by typing "ifdown eth0" and then "ifup eth0" - it then reflects the correct IP address. However, it won't 'have' and IP address upon boot. Also, it seems to hang on the logger service starting up. It sits there attempting to start logger for like 3-4 minutes (timed!). I suspect this problem is most likely related to the IP problem. I've tried moving the network connection to a dedicated HUB and still no luck. What is the correct config file to edit to set the IP address correctly? I tried editing the one in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts - but that didn't fix my problem. Thanks. Good Morning-- Since installing CentOS4 the other day, I've had trouble with Thunderbird 1.02 when attempting to click on a link within an email. Good Morning-- Since installing CentOS4 the other day, I've had trouble with Thunderbird 1.02 when attempting to click on a link within an email. Rather than opening a tab in Firefox 1.0.4, I get an error message: "Error showing url: There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location." When I installed CentOS, I left my home directory intact so I would have to re-option apps I had already been using. Has anyone else had this problem...and found a cure? List, I have the two servers CentOS 4.0 (running postfix, mailscanner) on this hardware: HP netserver 2000, PIII - 1GHz, 512 ram, two Hdd SCSI - 36 GB (RAID 1), I have monitored this server for a couple of months and I've seen that the memory used is increasing every week until it reaches all available memory and the server crashes.... at this point mailscanner crashes or sometimes the server gets freezed....my question is? Is this a memory leak? I 've always used this combination (mailscanner, postfix on Whitebox) and never got a problem, but when I upgrade my system to CentOS (kernel 2.6) this problem began.. can you help me? regards Israel

I would think someone would have noticed this in RHEL or CentOS if it was a pure kernel problem. What all are you running in the way of daemons? Something there could be to blame, no? Also, if the servers are identical in terms of software and hardware, have you considered a memory check? When I made the switch from Windows to Linux I discovered something interesting. Since Linux caches memory (as you probably already know) sometimes you are more likely to find out memory is defective on Windows than Linux, especially if the defect is at the end of the RAM, if that makes sense. The first time I experienced this was with a computer that originally ran Windows. Since it never touched the full 768mb I never had a problem. I switched to Linux and it started crashing immediately. I blamed it on Linux, but then ran the memory test and found out that what was happening is that Windows never used enough memory to touch that spot of bad RAM. But Linux did, caching it all then crashing. Maybe a longshot, but just in case your hardware and software configurations are identical (because you did mention two machines) it might be worth considering. Re 2GB R3000z RAM problem booting.

I upgraded to 2GB RAm on my laptop. Windows boots fine and memtest86 shows no error. However when I try to boot my the boot proces stops beyond the udev [ok] prompt. Suse 9.3 is working fine. Any ideas about what I need to do to fix this. Anand

Update 4.1 ISO's and JIGDO

When the update 1 iso's come out could jigdo templates also be released along with the bittorrent files? It would probably save a lot of bandwidth if bittorrent could be resumed on iso's rebuilt via jigdo from vast swathes of the iso's which most of us already have (the 4.0 packages and updates). Centos 4 - text based install - LVM ?

Has anyone gotten this to work ? I can define a raid device but cant put a VG on it. I then tried 'autopartition' and it created an 'LVM' of sorts, when I tried to edit it I wasnt able to as a message appeared saying, LVM editing was not allowed in text mode. Any help ? httpd won't start

I just upgraded one of my boxes to CentOS 3.5 and for some reason, httpd won't start now. It acts like it's going to, but the process just dies. Yum/RPM Update Conflicts

Hi, I've been trying to sort this out for the past week. I had a RedHat 7.3 desktop install with a disk dying on it. The desktop has two disks on it - one configured with /, /usr and /boot (this was the bad disk) and the second had /var and /home. I obtained a replacement disk and initially tried copying the /, /usr and /boot filesystems to the new disk but this ended up being a problem. In the end I just did an install of CentOS 3.3 (I already had some CDs for this) but I didn't reformat /var and /home. Since the install I've been fighting with dependencies while trying to do a yum update and I suspect it is to do with the rpm databases (being in /var). The dependency that I am having real problems with at the moment is initscripts and kbd. I have tried to use yum update but I get: . . Resolving dependencies .conflict between initscripts and kbd If I do yum list initscripts* kbd* I get: . . CentOS VERY different than RHEL

Since we recently got a site agreement for RHEL at work, I have been using it more. It seems that CentOS 4 and RHEL 4 are very different. CentOS seems to come with newer packages and overall be a more polished distro. This afternoon I will compare some packages and versions. anaconda in centOS 4 fails to read md raid arrays

Has anybody encountered this problem? I have a box that has FC2 installed. I wanted to trash the FC2 installation and install CentOS 4. I have a pxeboot/dhcp/kickstart environment and so I tried automatic disk partitioning (clear all partitions and then create new ones), manual disk partitioning but everything else is automated and finally, zero automation, just a manual installation through VNC. Need help with postgresql authentication set up

OS - CentOS4 PostgreSQL = 8.0.3 I think that I need to locate a custom pam module to use in pg_hba.conf that will allow phpPgAdmin to authenticate users against /etc/password (shadow). I cannot seem to find a straight forward reference to such a beast either in the documentation or on the web. The pam modules that I have found through google seem to be intended to allow one to authenticate against a pg database rather than designed to allow postmast to authenticate users against unix. pam_unix modules do not seem work perhaps because postmast runs as user postgres and this user does not posses sufficient authority to access /etc/passwd etc. Any help would be gratefully accepted. New to CentOS, miss Grip

Hi there-- Just installed CentOS 4 the other night and can figure out how to install Grip. I can't seem to satisfy the dependencies. Has anyone had success? Is there a reason why Grip isn't part of the distro that I should know about? My old distro was FC2. This was a wholesale installation and not an upgrade. Any help would be appreciated. Well, I always thought Apple was mainstream. It's still not a PC. It won't run on all PCs. That's fine, I always liked Apple's designs more. If they become the economies-of-scale competitor to Dell, that's fine with me -- and I'll even pay 20% more than Dell for them. In fact, I hope to God that Apple's firmware ends up being a standard approach that replaces the God awful PC BIOS. Even if Apple won't ever open it up so MacOS X runs on regular PCs, at least it will be nice to see a good firmware on a PC platform for once! dragging windows leaves traces

I have an excellent nvidia graphics card, I get excellent fps, all agp features are installed correctly etc. When I drag windows around wit hthe opaque settings on it leaves traces for a couple milliseconds as it redraws the window, but it just looks so crummy to see. I am having a hard time convincing people that using linux is a good idea. People make judgements on this type of thing and they think that linux is slow compared to Windows. When I had windows installed on this same machine dragging windows around did not produce any traces. Using linux on the desktop looks like a throwback to windows 95 on a 486. Does anyone have any advice on how to make X redraw windows better. --

Things like CPU temp, FAN speed, Volts etc. Works on dual CPUs nicely too. You may need to compile a kernel with support for the on-board sensor chip. Use 'sensors-detect' to find out. greetings recently i asked a question and i was directed to the possibility that a certain fully enabled compiled kernel for CentOS 4 might help me. so, i am looking at http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/centos/4/centosplus/Readme.txt and wondering how to cover all bases.... can i cover all bases if i put an *blanket* package(s) exclude in /etc/yum.conf ? or do i have to put package(s) exclude in every config file in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory ? specifically, the CentOS-Base.repo file. do i put it at the top and then it will be in effect for all sub-repos in that file?? at the top of the CentOS-Base.repo only? :) i realize that i can do it as a command line switch yet then my brains will fall out trying to remember everything. regards and tia for any clarification. - rh

Hmmm, sounds like a window manager/environment issue, unless you're having a video card issue (see below). What is your desktop environment? > I am having a hard time convincing people that using linux is a good idea. Umm, what Windows version offers translucent settings comparable to Linux desktops? None that I know of. And by "opaque," do you mean translucent/ "see through" is turned on, but set to 0%? If so, that's still transcluent. No shipping Windows or Linux distribution I know of uses video card framebuffer to off-load such complex rendering. It's done 100% in software, hence why Microsoft doesn't bother to offer it, and Linux desktops are slow at it. The only major OS I know of that ships using OpenGL to manage window framebuffer directly in video framebuffer is MacOS X via "QuartzExtreme." Microsoft was adding this capability to NT6.0 "Longhorn" in its new, Avalon desktop, but the development has been pushed back and out of NT6.0 "Longhorn" client. To put a "good face" on this, Microsoft is still releasing NT6.0 "Longhorn" client with this next generation Windows Graphics Foundation (WGF), but only version 1.0 which uses existing DirectX 9 code. In a nutshell, DirectX 9 still doesn't have the full geometry setup of OpenGL, which makes it far, far less capable of what QuartzExtreme is capable of with age-old OpenGL 1.2+. WGF 2.0, which incorporates many new features to address these deficiencies (in a nutshell, what was DirectX 10) will ship at a latter date and supposedly address WGF 1.0's shortcomings (I'll believe it when I see it -- there's still a lot of legacy GDI issues to overcome). For more on this, see my PC_Support post here: http://lists.leap-cf.org/pipermail/pc_support/2005-May/000333.html Now in the Linux world, The FreeDesktop.org "Cario" project (not to be confused with the original NT4.0 release codename) adds many things, including direct window-to-video framebuffer via OpenGL over X11 (GLX). It iss being adopted by a number of desktop suites, including Enlightment R17 as well as GNOME 3. A few window managers already implement it, or their own solution. Sun's LookingGlass desktop actually uses a non-X11 system (and quite a number of other, innovative APIs -- including 3D _input_ as _standard_), but offers X11/GLX for compatibility (and, thus, should support "Cario" interfaces as well). But until these features ship as standard in either Windows or Linux distros (think Fedora Core 5 / RHEL 5 / CentOS 5 time-frame ;-), don't expect good performance with opaque desktops where the software is doing really slow and ugly memory maps to/from the video card, over the system interconnect, etc... Although nVidia has maintained a level of upward compatibility since the original NV0x series (Riva TNT/TNT2) up to the latest NV4x (GeForce 6000 series), if you load an older driver that was never designed for the latest series, you will get similiar symtopms. Example 1: NV2x/NV30-era XFree86 (FC1) with NV40 card Last summer I had upgraded another system, a dual Athlon MP2400+, from a GeForce4 Ti4200 (NV25) to a GeForce 6800GT (NV40). Running Fedora Core 1 at the time, I was using a similar XFree86 release as RHEL/CentOS 3. That version includes only NV2x (GeForce3/4Ti) and early NV30 (GeForce FX5800) era support . I got the same results until I upgraded to the nVidia driver. Example 2: NV1x-era Windows XP with NV40 card Just this past April, I loaded _Windows_XP on a brand new Athlon64 3200+ system with a GeForce 6800GT (NV40) card. XP detected a GeForce compatible card and loaded the driver from when the NV1x series was current (GeForce2 era). I experienced the _exact_same_ issues in XP until I grabbed the latest WHQL driver for XP. Example 3: NV4x-era Xorg (FC3) with NV40 card Now on the _very_same_system_, I loaded Fedora Core 3 AMD64 which includes a newer Xorg release with not only NV40 (GeForce 6800), but even some NV41/43 (GeForce 6200/6600) and the latest NV45 (GeForce 6800, PCIe native). So I didn't have an issue even using the stock Xorg driver. So, are you sure you are using the nVidia driver _downloaded_ from nVidia? Or are you simply using the nVidia (nv) driver CentOS 3 is detecting when installed? I want to say, given your symptomps, you're using the later, which (even with update 4) is still a NV2x/NV30 driver, and not good for later NV31/34 (GeForce FX5200/5500) let alone NV4x (GeForce 6000 series) cards. And if you are using the nVidia driver, please note that you want to be running with the _latest_ 1.0-6xxx series driver (avoid the new 1.0-7xxx series driver until it matures). The 1.0-6xxx series driver is required for NV40 (GeForce 6800 series), and latter versions for NV41/43/NV45. Linux > install was smooth as in Windows 95 smooth on a P4. ] The GeForce FX5200 is the NV34 (or NV31?, I think that was the FX5900 or FX5700 -- the higher designation is not necessary faster, just newer, and can be actually an economy design). Anything Fedora Core 2+ (including CentOS 4) should support it, or possibly late Fedora Core 1 (and CentOS 3) with the final XFree86 updates. <TANGENT> BTW, I know people get into the big "proprietary" debate on nVidia. Just some facts to know of: 1) nVidia released the source code back in the XFree86 3.3.x days 2) Intel, Microsoft and other 3rd parties who owned IP in that release were not amused, and even though nVidia obfusciated the identifiers and structure of the C code, people started "cleaning it up" and exposing what Intel, Microsoft and others did not want. 3) XFree86 4.0 is MIT licensed introduced a modular design that supports closed source drivers, which nVidia and Matrox quickly took advanatge of. 4) It was at that time nVidia decided to "unify" it's entire NV0x on-ward driver model (Riva TNT and GeForce on-ward, but not earlier, pre-NV0x Riva/128). This has driven all their other decisions. 5) As part of the unified driver and its AGPgart and memory functions, nVidia was contractually forbidden to release it GPL -- by Intel itself. Intel considered AGP a "trade secret" implementation of PCI (AGP is _not_ a PCI Standards Group standard), hence why nVidia's AGP implementation and specifications were only in their closed video driver (not even the nForce -- it only worked for nForce+GeForce). The Intel AGPgart in the kernel is largely a clean-room design (and rather limited). NOTE: #5 is going away as with the release of PCI-Express by the PCI SG (an actual, open standard), Intel no longer considers AGP a "trade secret" and has freed up some of nVidia's obligations. There is already AGPgart code for nVidia chipsets in newer kernels, so you don't have to have a GeForce on a nForce chipset. 6) nVidia puts more developers on the MIT-licensed XFree86/Xorg drivers than anyone else. nVidia is completely open with its 2D drivers and specifications, including video-in/video-out and other scan converters. In a nutshell, the 2D MIT (nv) driver is very, very good as long as recent for the latest card support, because nVidia supports it. Of course, older releases with newer cards will always be a performance issue, and system-specific implementations (such as the Go Mobile series in notebooks) will definitely lack compatibility. The nVidia-licensed "nvidia" driver is a unifed 2D/3D with complete OpenGL-standards, ARB extensions as well as a few nVidia extension (this is far, far less common in the OpenGL world). The OpenGL on X11 (GLX) implementation is unmatched and without it, Linux would have not been so widely adopted as the primary visual workstation in the CAM and EDA world over the last 5-7 years (only as a back-end solution). If you just need 2D, you don't need the "nvidia" driver, not even for TV scan conversion. But the 3D version at least gives you an "open standard" platform, meaning you write applications to an "open standard" that does not require nVidia hardware. nVidia drivers continue to be trusted, based on open standard GLX performance and reliability. I see a few people complaining about the new 1.0-7xxx series of drivers, but that's not unexpected because it's a brand new driver release with OpenGL 2.0 and some major changes in how it handles VESA defaults (it's a bit more conservative, which is breaking things that used to be autodetected). 7) ATI tried to "go clean-room 3D" with its indirect support of UtahGLX and Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI) and releasing of the R100 series (Radeon 7500-8000) and R200 (Radeon 8500-9000) series. These 3D implementations were add-ons to the stock MIT drivers. Unfortunately, the lag time between release and lack of variant endless support (e.g., RV280/Radeon 9200, etc...) often caused major headaches and issues -- let alone performance sucked. Worse yet was the fact that nVidia had established itself as _the_ video card/ driver combo for production GLX. So as of the R300 (Radeon 9500+) series, ATI has _withheld_ 3D specifications. In reality, ATI has always withheld not only some 3D, but even 2D interfaces. This is largely because ATI has some really advanced 2D image encoding and other logic in their GPUs that are partially driven by software/algorithms licensed from a 3rd party (whereas nVidia largely off-chipsets much of its capabilities, or uses commodity approaches/algorithms that it has no issues documenting). Although some of the UtahGLX/DRI code still works for R300+ series cards, they are now severely lagging. Which means ATI now offers a "closed source" unified driver as well. 8) My final comments The reality is that video card products are _obsoleted_ within 12 months. GPUs double in performance 2-3 times faster than CPUs, which means driver development goes hand-in-hand with engineering development _pre-release_. In other words, we can dream of a day where there is no cutting-edge intellectual property in GPUs so vendors can release drivers as GPL, and not have to hack kernel interfaces because of 3rd party NDA obligations. But the idea that video card drivers can be community developed means that their drivers wouldn't be released until the GPU is already 1-2 generations behind. This is the reality of the product. Now, luckily, OpenGL/GLX are "open standards," and most vendor extensions are submitted and formalized by an architectural review board. This is very different than the DirectX world where "features" are often vendor-only extensions, and not always standardized in the API -- which is largely a wrapper to required, physical and often eccentric GPU functions until almost commodity 3-4+ generations behind and all video cards have them. This is why many applications in Windows require specific video cards, and not even after 2-3 generations the titles will run (if ever). So by supporting the OpenGL/GLX "open standards," even if you are running a proprietary, closed source driver to run your OpenGL/GLX application, it means you will be able to run it in the future on another video card. Even if the ARB extensions utilized and only supported by 1-2 "cutting edge" video cards (namely ATI and nVidia), they are typically supported by other cards within 1-2 generations by the very nature of how the OpenGL ARB works. </TANGENT> -- Bryan J. If you can give more examples, maybe we can confirm this. Qt/KDE is built with some optional X11 (RENDER?) extensions which don't play nice with non-Qt apps (Xt, Xaw, GTK+, Motif, etc...). FrontPage Extensions

Has anyone had success getting FrontPage extensions to work with Centos-4. I've been trying to set up a virtual hosting server with front page support. Hi, My computer has only primaly IDE but not secondaly. I connected a hard drive as Master and DVD-R as Slave on IDE. BIOS doesn't recognize IDE devices, but Windows XP that boots up from SATA hard drive can recognize DVD-R and can read files on the CentOS Installer Disk 1 of 4. Is it possible to start Centos4 Installer from WindowsXP? If possible, which file on Disk 1 should I click? Even if they are possible, can CentOS boot up from IDE Master hard drive? Hi, My Delete key does not work anymore in gnome-terminal. I have a keyboardless server, so I think this may be the problem. When I press the Delete key, I get the ~ caracter printed. I deleted all the ~/.g* files, in order to have a clean and default gnome installation but still, no luck. DVD writer problem

I have an NEC DVD-RW ND2500A (that's not the label I bought it under, but that's what it really is.) It's supposed to read/write CDs, DVDs, DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs. I'm basically dual booting between XP and CentOS 4. Following the recipe in "The Linux Cookbook", I tried to copy a DVD using: dd if=/dev/hdd of=/tmp/diskfile.iso then cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd fs=32m -sao -v -eject -dummy /tmp/diskfile.iso to test and cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd fs=32m -sao -v -eject /tmp/diskfile.iso to actually record. I had a lot of trouble getting a good read of the whole original DVD--it kept getting an I/O error at 94-95% of the way through. After multiple cleanings and 20-40 attempts, I finally got the whole thing copied with no reported errors. It then took me a couple of tries to get the cdrecord options right and to run as root to get the requisite priority. The "-dummy" run ran with no errors that I noticed--there was an LOT of output--and "-dummy" didn't work. It wrote to the blank DVD anyway. I then did a run without the "-dummy". Although the original will play on both my PC and the DVD player hooked to the TV, the two copied DVDs (DVD+Rs) are coasters. DURN! Any solutions, suggestions, pointers to articles I should read, etc. will be appreciated. BTW, I've never quite gotten around to playing DVDs or my music files (mp3 and Real Player .rmj files) from Linux. I'd appreciate being pointed in the direction to start. -mj-

bad blocks showing up

I am getting a few bad sector messages in my /var/log/messages. I have read where an "fsck -c -c /dev/hda" may be what I need. Before I go doing such things I am looking for confirmation that that is what I should do. Anyone please comment on how to tell linux to not use sectors in my disk. I am trying to rebuild multimedia rpms for CentOs3.4 I have downloaded povray from thac's site. Near the packaging prt of the build I get an error.... Processing files: povray-debuginfo-3.1g-19.el3 error: Could not open %files file /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/povray31/debugfiles.list: No such file or directory RPM build errors: Could not open %files file /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/povray31/debugfiles.list: No such file or directory I have rebuilt many other rpms without this error. Can someone explain what is going on here.

But by that logic shouldn't the credit be given to each contributor to each individual project that goes into a distro? Red Hat doesn't create mySQL, do they? Or Apache? How about Firefox? Is that Red Hat's baby? Point is, if you keep on saying "give credit where credit is due" you have to pass it down the line to the individual developers, testers, bug-fixers, etc. for the thousands of projects that go into RHEL. Not to mention all the brave Fedora users. So in the end, all things being equal and considering the above, my vote goes for CentOS. Preston

I am a bit puzzled at the versioning scheme of the RedHat clone family. RedHat seems to use integer 4, Tao and Centos does the same. If you do rpm -q --qf '%{version}\n' -f /etc/redhat-release you get '4'. However, Scientific Linux uses 4.0, and that seems to me to be a more logical choise, since presumable there are going to be versions 4.1, 4.2, etc. Is there any good reason for the version of package centos-release NOT to be 4.0? It has a significance in automated scripts trying to work out which distribution and version you are running, and it seems silly to treat the different RHEL4 clones differently. It would make sense for CentOS to coordinate/agree_upon a common scheme among the different distributions. My approach has been to only add packages I know are safe and won't conflict with core FC/RHEL packages, and then install any additional from either an internal APT-RPM or YUM-RPM repository. I typically do the latter to fetch system updates anyway, including creation of RPMs for key configuration files (and updates). E.g., "CONFIG_BS-2.1.noarch.rpm" (the package name conviniently matching my initials if anyone hasn't noticed that yet ;-). Other vendors use completely different lines for "enterprise" drives, using better lubricants, filters, mechanics, etc... > Is their possibly something with ext3 that stresses drives more? > Maybe the location of the journaling info? Naah, that would affect FAT systems and others too. The main problem is the density, spindle, heat and "ultra-thin manufacturing margin" of the drives these days. Especially given the increased spindles, the "cheap drives" just don't last under the constant operation and heat at 7200rpm. The "Big 3" manufacturers are Hitachi, Maxtor and Segate. IBM, Western Digital and other vendors no longer manufacture, and haven't for awhile. Hitachi and Seagate have split-lines, commodity and enterprise. Interface doesn't have anything to do with it, and even Hitachi and Seagate have SATA and SCSI models that use the exact same lines as their most commodity ATA ones. Of course, they also offer "Enterprise" ATA, SATA and SCSI models too, that are rated for much higher tolerances. Maxtor actually has a single commodity approach. Then they test drives against tolerances and rate them for MTBF and warranty based on that testing. I.e., all drives pretty much come off the same line, but the "Enterprise" drives are the ones that test high, while the "commodity" drives are everything left over. I'm partial to Seagate, despite the extra 10-20% cost on the commodity models, because they are giving 3-5 warranties as standard. Reason for asking is that no matter what require statement (except valid-user) I try to use, apache logs "unknown require directive". Even Linus admits that he based many things off of SunOS 4.1 (retroactively Solaris 1) and Solaris 2, and Solaris uses 2-3. Hi all, I've been approached by someone who has an installation of rhel ES 3 (taroon update 2) to see whether I can take over doing security and other updates for them (no current rhn subscription). What I want to know is, with a suitable yum setup can I use a centos3 repository to apply updates to this box? If so, should I source updates from centos 3.5? Does the whole box need to become a centos3 box to do this? They'd really like to disturb the existing box (I agree) as little as possible since it's a stable production server, and mainly just want important security related updates etc. done. It's a common thing that people do, and goes to the heart of the trademark matter, as well as gross mis-representation and lack of attention to detail by many. People assume something is "Red Hat(R) Linux" because the "Red Hat(R)" trademark is on it. They assume it is completely different if the trademark is not. It doesn't matter if completely modified packages for an architecture Red Hat never supported, and the packages are even completely SRPM _incompatible_, people believed it was still "Red Hat(R) Linux." Ironically, people assume "Fedora(TM) Core" has nothing to do with "Red Hat(R) Enterprise Linux" -- or is at least completely different in its relationship with RHEL than "Red Hat(R) Linux" was -- merely because of the "branding." In training courses, I've taken people completely through an entire rebuild of core packages, down to version, of Fedora Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as well as SuSE Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and it's amazing to see that FC and RHEL differ far less than SL and SLES. If the RPM version is the same for a package of Fedora Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, they _are_ the same from the standpoint of GPL source code. If I do something within my company, my company isn't going to consider it redistribution. My company is aware that I am using something under circumstances that are not public. So there is no need to abide by the GPL license in how I use it, and no need for a trademark license either. But once I start redistributing that outside the entity I work for, then that's when the legal issues mount. If I am redistributing additional code with the GPL software that modifies it in a way that it works differently, then the original copyright holder, under the granted terms of the GPL, says I have to offer the source code of those modifications under the same terms, without restriction. If I don't, then I am distributing the copyright holder's work without a license, and he is due damages. Same deal with trademark. Once I start redistributing Red Hat's trademark publicly, I am doing so without a license. And they are due damages. Lack of Red Hat's trademark and artwork does not prevent the GPL software from being used the same as with it. That's the difference. Red Hat is one of the very few that do for _both_, so things like CentOS can exist. And it depends on who you redistributed it to. That's why I used the term "publicly" redistributed. Because unlike the MPL1.0 (or is the opposite, and 1.1?) and many GPL-incompatible licenses, the GPL does _not_ require you to return any modifications to the copyright holders _unless_ you redistribute it. The MPL and most off-shoots _do_. GPL gives you the right to do what the heck you want with it -- even merge it with proprietary source code. Unless Red Hat can prove that you are misappropriating their trademarks _publicly_ -- their mark in the trade -- then they can't prevent you from installing it on as many systems as you want, and doing what they heck you want. One of these days I'm going to finish a book on Red Hat Configuration Management and show an _exact_ lineage of a RHEL release built on Fedora Core. Trust me on this, I've built Fedora Core systems that were _exact_ package equivalents to RHEL -- with the only real exception being the kernel. I typically had to "hold back" on versions from what was "current" in Fedora Core, as well as align up the Fedora Core version to RHEL. But they are 1:1 -- versions are everything. SuSE does the same thing for SuSE Linux v. SuSE Linux Enterprise Server. They don't redistribute a lot of the latter. Xandros is the same on many of its details, etc... > I agree. Hey all. Has anyone been able to successfully install CentOS 4 in Virtual PC on the Mac? I have tried numerous times in both gui and text install mode w/ and w/o package customization and minimum and everything install. The install dies just when packages are beginning to be installed or very shortly thereafter. I don't get a full screen of errors to share as they pass by the screen too far and end w/ a message saying the installation has died unexpectedly. Any ideas? Thanks, ~Dan

I can copy anything "Red Hat(R)" to my hearts content as long as I don't publicly redistribute it. Red Hat tried to clarify its trademark guidelines on "Red Hat(R)" several times to allow for Cheapbytes and other, 100% unmodified redistribution. But eventually the entire issue came to a head, and US Trademark Common Law is rather non-forgiving on Red Hat's past history of allowing its trademark to be freely redistributed. The reason why GPL is enforceable is because it doesn't take away copyright. In the same regard, the GPL does not take away any other rights to IP. It only says _source_. It says you must provide the source to anyone you redistribute the software to (in whatever form that software may be). This is Stallman's "Moral Delima" at its finest. Several GPL products exist where the vendor does _not_ provide you with the binary redistribution for free, or even the source for that matter, but the source is included with the binary distribution -- "for a nominal fee." From the resolv.conf man page -- "The algorithm used is to try a name server, and if the query times out, try the next, until out of name servers, then repeat trying all the name servers until a maximum number of retries are made" IMHO, if 2 or 3 aren't sufficient then you should really consider the root cause why you need more and correct that ;) -- Marc

The main reason I see this topic come up over and over is because people who are new to UNIX coming from Windows don't realize that they have been "programmed" into thinking what reboots are for. Prior to the proliferation of Windows, barring hardware failure, reboots were pretty limited to scheduled maintenance. Sure, user-space programs have memory leaks, new options are buggy, etc... And sometimes you have to stop, start, debug, etc... those services. But for the most part, the core, kernel in just about any UNIX system has not only been fairly devoid of major issues because of the inherit attitude of its developers. _Nothing_ goes into the kernel that is not required, and that means _not_ putting in services for performance or other hacks. So that means that memory leaks and other things that are very problematic in newer services or changes are typically left to only user-space services which can be fully pre-emptive. Even NT 3.1 put things into kernel space that should have never been in there. It got worse with NT 3.51 "Daytona" for "Chicago" (DOS7.0 aka "Windows 95") compatibility, and NT 4.0 "Cario" was the ultimate bastard prior until NT 5.1 (XP/2003). In the UNIX world, you can stop all sorts of user-spaces -- pretty much all of them if you wish -- which many admins do to resolve issues. Take down nmb/smb, take down ldapd, etc... to deal with issues. The system usually stays up and continues servicing many other capabilities -- because they are not part of the kernel space itself. This is very much unlike the NT world. The server, spooler and other services are tied into the kernel. Restarting them is typically impossible or ineffective when there is an issue, because the issue is in the kernel, and the user-space component restart doesn't help. Then there are the "Chicago" components that have been tacked on since NT 3.51, 4.0 and, probably most deadly, in NT 5.1 (XP/2003). These services and libraries -- designed for the "free for all" of "Chicago" (including MS IE) -- wreak havoc on the protected NT kernel's space. KEY POINT: This is why you should _never_ reboot UNIX/Linux in the hope that it solves the problem like it typically does Windows. In the Windows world, it typically fixes the issue -- even if temporary -- because even the user space components typically have kernel-space services for performance, etc... -- e.g., IIS, SMB, etc... Although Microsoft seems to be putting IIS and other things into the "Indigo .NET Sandbox" in NT6.0 Longhorn, the ADS, SMB and other non-.NET services are still going to be 100% Legacy Win32+Chicago code. So it's not getting any better anytime soon, and reboots will still be required to "clean things out." In the UNIX world, if you reboot, you are typically presented with _no_ resolution. You're best bet is to find the root cause and fix it, instead of wasting time rebooting. Plus, there is also the additional consideration of additional issues a UNIX reboot can introduce. E.g., UNIX/Linux systems are rebooted so infrequently that many boot-time configurations can change but not be known for months, or even years! So it's best to _only_ reboot UNIX/Linux when you have time for scheduled maintenance. So if there is one thing I highly deter new UNIX/Linux administrators from doing, it is doing an "impulsive reboot." It's better to just work the problem, then to reboot, waste time (in the best case) and possibly introduce even more, unforseen issues in changes (in the worst case). -- Bryan J. Now if you prefer a distro with SLAs, but just normally don't because of cost, I'd actually vote RHEL (or SLES if that is your preferrence) instead of CentOS. I guess I should actually read the wording of the vote, but it's kinda like cars. You can like a car without actually owning it. Hi all, New member here and new to Linux. Please excuse me if my questions appear a bit dumb. I have just installed CentOS 4 and I am playing around. I must say the install process was fabulous and I had no problems. I am now playing with a few of the apps. I have a Canon Pixma MP780 multi-function centre which was correctly identified by the installer however I cannot find a driver for it and hence cannot print to it. Does anyone know if a Linux driver exists for this printer or alternatively what existing printer driver will work. Thanks in advance. Ian

top not showing %CPU

I'm running with CentOS4 on a 2 cpu machine. I'm running a java process which creates a large number of threads as well as other native processes running under heavy load mixing 200+ audio streams. However, top shows none of these having any %CPU time. All of them read 0.0, except for top itself which occasionally shows up with 0.7, and migration/N with 0.3. All other processes read 0.0. The load average of the machine varies between 1.5 and 4.0. Any suggestions on where to look for the problem would be appreciated, Warren

is it possible to parse an e-mail to 2 AV? when the server recieve an e-mail with attachment it will run on both AV? in amavis' logs i can only see one AV which is nai. And i also noticed that clamd configuration in amavisd.conf is on the av_scanners_backup part.

CentOS4 installer can't find a hard drive to install.

Hi, My computer is DELL DIMENSION 8400. SATA setting is below: port0 is connected to a WDC WD2500JD-75H and making RAID1 with prot2. port1 is connected to a MAXTOR 6Y120MO and set to Non-RAID. port2 is connected to a WDC WD2500JD-75H and making RAID1 with prot0. WindowsXP is installed in the RAID1 set. I want to install CentOS4 into the MAXTER's hard drive, but I can't. CentOS4 installer says "No drive was found. Do you find a driver now?" I tried all drivers that the installer showed. Each driver doesn't work. Finally the installer says "No drive to install. Check your hardware." BIOS recognizes MAXTER and diagnostic is PASS. WindowsXP finds MAXTER as a new found device. Why CentOS4 installer can't fined any hard drives? Thanks in advance, Takashi Nakamura

ntwork problem

I switched my file server's hard disks from a p-2 350 to a p-3 deley 1.1 ghz. I ran kudzu and it detected the new nic and unconfigured the old one. I may have messed up the static ip assignment because hte system is not able to do anything on the network. How do i check the ipaddress asignment and also ensure the proper linksys LNE-100TX driver is loaded? thanks. Attempting custom CentOS4 network install

Hi I am installing CentOS4 over ether network using http and kickstart. I boot from the first CentOS CD and at "boot:" prompt I input "ks=http://localserver/install/custom.cfg". Except for minor glitches like "Kernel-Development group not found" warning, the process is smooth and is almost completely automated. Now, I want to add additional RPMS to the CentOS/RPMS directory to install additional packages in the default install. In preparation, I was regenerating the hdlist using "genhdlist" even before adding the extra RPMS, just to checkout. A new hdlist and hdlist2 is sucessfully regenerated in CentOS/base dir with a small reduction in file size of hdlist, but the network install fails at the end of "Preparing RPM transaction" screen with the message "install exited abnormally" and shuts down. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance Ajay

No, it's a geometry issue on legacy BIOS/DOS Disk Labels (Partition Table Format) aka "Basic Disc" in NT5+ (2000+) when both NT and Linux share the disk for booting. Microsoft never standardized how geometry should be handled after NT4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) other than using legacy LBA32 -- i.e., always assuming Sectors/Heads of 63/255. In NT5+, this is what it does on a "Basic Disc" which cannot store geometry information, at least through NT5.1 (XP/2003) Service Pak 1 (SP1). Unfortunately, assuming LBA32 is not compatible with Extended Int13h Disk Services. And for broken BIOSes, it can cause issues with 3rd party boot managers and disk utilities. This isn't an issue with using the Logical Disk Manager (LDM) Disk Label (Partition Table Format) aka "Dynamic Disc" because all NT5+ (2000+) instances on the system can read it's explicitly reserved areas and find out the exact geometry assumed by the first NT5+ install that created it. The Linux kernel as of early 2.4.x, thanx to work done by the NTFS-LDM project, can also read this and not have to make any assumptions on geometry (which can be an issue with 2.6 and its standard support for Extended Int13h Services -- see below). Microsoft has tried to address it with both some pre-NT5.1 Service Pack 2 (SP2) hot-fixes, some applied in SP2 and even more post-NT5.1SP2 hotfixes. Because the legacy BIOS/DOS Disk Label does not have a place where to reserve disk geometry, Microsoft choose part of Cylinder 0 where it's MBR doesn't reside. Unfortunately, many 3rd party boot managers, including GRUB, do use part of that space. I've run into this first-hand where I had no problems dual-booting on even a 800GB disk array _until_ I upgraded to NT5.1SP2 (XPSP2). After the upgrade, GRUB was broken. After re-installing GRUB, it would no longer boot XP, because GRUB overwrote the hidden geometry info in Cylinder 0 that XP needed for boot-time support. After a few more systems, I discovered that XP only wrote it if the boot volume passed the 33.8GB (32GiB) barrier -- at least on my disks that were BIOS LBA32 geometry with Sectors/Heads of 63/255. On newer disk arrays that break the 2.2TB (2TiB) barrier by supporting LBA48 / >255 heads, you _must_ basically use a LDM Disk Label. It appears Microsoft is not interested in any more "hacks" to support legacy BIOS/DOS Disk Labels -- especially given the fact that a lot of PC BIOS' out there are "broken" in their Extended Int13h Services and support for geometry beyond LBA32. In a nutshell, Microsoft doesn't trust anything from the PC BIOS, and expects to always rely on the geometry info in the LDM Disk Label for now on (and I don't blame them). Linux kernel 2.6 was written to the ATA-6/LBA48 and Extended Int13h Services specifications to overcome the LBA32/2.2TB (2TiB) limit but is breaking all sorts of things in the process. Newer user-space tools like Parted and GRUB are now getting "more intelligent" in trying to apply what geometry to "assume" based on what kernel 2.6 gives them. It's no longer safe to blindly assume Sectors/Heads of 63/255, which is how 2.4 and earlier used to deal with dual-booting. > My system has two 120GB disks I've typically found that as long as: A) I'm not dual-booting late NT5.1 hot-fixes/service packs (i.e., SP2+) B) I stay under LBA28/137GB (128GiB) I don't have the issue, even when booting NT and Linux on the same disk. > and a 160 GB disk. Then you're fine. As long as NT and Linux aren't sharing the same disk for boot, you'll typically have no issues. The Linux kernel, even more so 2.6, is pretty good at trying to figure out the geometry. It's only when booting that geometry can get screwed up, because you're at the mercy of the BIOS -- or a boot-loader that attempts to overcome it's limitations. On a LDM Disk Label (Dynamic Disc), it can directly read the geometry assumed by NT. On a legacy BIOS/DOS Disk Label (Basic Disc), it will try various geometries -- from legacy LBA32 to (in 2.6) full standard Extended Int13h Services geometry support. Centos4 SMP Kernel OOM

Hello, I've just run out of memory on a dual xeon with 5GB ram, considering there should have been around 4GB free (not counting buffers and cache)... this is unusual. Now after it OOM'ed I tried running top and memory usage was fine (around 1GB of 5, no swap usage of 12GB). So I thought it was a temporary thing, but processes kept on OOM'ing for no understandable reason... while swap was empty and memory continued to show 3GB free (and look at the weird log messages...) I know the kernel-2.6.x this support is part of the kernel, but in CentOS this support is unaviable. How can aviable this support whit out recompiler kernel?? Some rpm packege for do that?? Hello, does anybody know how to achieve the following with SSH... a) accept RSA authentication for all but root from any IP b) accept RSA authentication for root from a couple IPs/Netmasks c) accept password authentication for all but root from a dozen Netmasks d) accept password authentication for root from 3 local netmasks only ie. make authentication depend on the USER,METHOD,CLIENT-IP triplet...
