Trying to get up and running with Open Office beta

I was using the beta version of Open Office on Windows for... I don't know how long, but many months now. I quite like it and would like to replace the current stable 1.1 build of OpenOffice that came with CentOS with the beta. So i downloaded the RPMs from the OpenOffice site and dutifully followed their installation instructions, and it went well. I think. I mean, there were no errors and it did a whole bunch of unpacking and stuff. But any office document I try to open still opens with the previous OpenOffice, I can't find any icons for the OpenOffice Beta in any of my menus, and any documents I had created with OpenOffice Beta in Windows aren't recognized by CentOS. In short, I think it's installed, but I don't know how to start it. How do I do that, and how do I remove the "old" Open Office? Dave

Hi, Just install CentOS using Japanese, so you can use Japanese on Gnome. It means that when you are installing CentOS, you must choose Japanese language . When you get on your account, click language and choose Japanese as well before typing your user name and password. You just push Ctrl and space at the same time, so you can type Japanese on Firefox, Mozilla, Openoffice and so on. For example, if you want to type "さよなら", you need to type "SAYONARA" on your English keyboard. If you want to use Chinese characters for Japanese language, push space after typing Japanese, so you can choose Chinese characters. Hope that this helps you. How to login to a new session?

I have Cent OS 4 with KDE. How do I enable an option of starting a new session with the current running? What I want to do is.....If I Lock my Screen, the other user should be able to Login to a new session on the Same computer. I hope this is clear. Thank you. -- "No-one dies a virgin. Multiple instances of firefox.

What should i do to run multiple instances of Firefox? I mean whenever I click on the firefox to start a new window, it asks me to create a new profile. I use Firefox 1.0.6 on Cent OS 4. -- "No-one dies a virgin. Life screws everyone."

Gnome Logouts -- are very slow or they hang -- 2nd post

! I just installed Centos 4.1 (i386) on one of my test drives. When ever I try to logout of a Gnome session, it seems to hang but if I wait about 4-5 minutes it will usually logout, although I have had it hang a couple of times (never logs out). When I do an ALT-TAB-F1, and log in as 'root', I can see the following processes still hanging around after Gnome finally does logout: /usr/libexec/gam_server /usr/bin/ssh_agent -s For every log in session I try, there is a copy of the 'ssh_agent' still hanging around after Gnome finally logs out. Could this be what's causing the problem? KDE logins will also cause these two programs to hang aroud, but it will usually logout in a timely fashion. Any help would be appreciated.

Bacula

We are presently looking into alternative backup strategies for our networked servers and are considering Bacula. Does anyone have any opinions on this application, good and bad, to share? Further, is there a CentOS4 specific rpm build available for this in a yum repository (I note that CentOS4 tags have been added to the Bacula source tree)? RPM Compatibility

It is my understanding that RPMs built for RHEL 4 are suppose to be compatible with Centos 4.1. How about ones built for Fedora 3 or 4? I thinking mainly about add-on programs that are not part of the core package.

Adaptec 2230SLP not detected

[I originally sent this using the wrong email address - apologies if it appears twice] Hello Everyone, Has anyone tried installing CentOS 4 x86_64 on a machine with an Adaptec 2230SLP card? I've just tried it, and Anaconda could not detect the card. I've manually loaded the aacraid driver, which then starts the install process. But, when the install gets to disk partitioning, the installer reports that no drives were detected, and aborts. I was quite confident that the 2230SLP would be supported in CentOS 4, especially since I've seen the card mentioned being used in RHEL 3 boxes. I'm about to give the drivers from the Adaptec site a try. If there's another solution I'm missing, I'd appreciate any pointers. Business software for Linux

I am hoping to find a inventory management program suitable for something like a bookstore or other 1-5 person smb. The software would need to be able to accept inputs from wireless handheld scanning devices for entry into the system. It must also work with their windows based PoS computer. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
