As to whether C or C++ changed between when 2.96 came out and Centos 4.1, there is another conundrum: Does the compiler define the language, or vice versa? Acknowledging the human factor in the implementation of the compiler, we ought to stipulate that both 2.96 and 3.x are B - R - O - K - E - N; the question I've asked is in what way is 3.x different in how it's broken compared to 2.96 2.96 allowed some things not strictly kosher under the C/C++ language definitions, some of these are no longer winked at by the 3.x compiler. I'm looking for a pragmatic answer, not a theorist answer, about the differences between 2.96 and 3.x. Since nothing is coming to mind among the Notable Ones here, I'll take my question to the compiler groups... Vsftp is not writing a log file

No doubt I am making some stupid mistake in the log file, but I cannot get vsftp to create a log file showing the transfers. x86_64 rpms

I have just loaded up CentOS4.1 on a PE1850 with twin Intel x86_64's. When I came to clean out those packages I didn't want (because some always creep in however careful you are), apart from those with dependencies, I notice a lot of cases where there are two packages of the same name installed - one clearly an x86 package and one an x86_64 package. eg apr Is this intentional and if it is, how do I remove using rpm -e those packages with duplicate modules without removing those that will break dependencies? pam and sasl2-sample-server failure

I'm setting up a postfix server using "The Book of Postfix". In ch 15 there is a section on testing saslauthd which I can't get to work. I can get it to work using shadow password authentication, but it fails on pam. I don't kow squat about troubleshooting pam. Any PAM wizzes out there that can help? I saw a unrelated post talking about something needing to be in the pam sasl group. Had no idea what that meant. sasl ins't a user, or group. I setup and try saslauthd -m /var/run/saslauthd -a pam -d sasl2-sample-server -s rcmd -p 8000 sasl2-sample-client -s rcmd -p 8000 -m LOGIN 127.0.0.1 If I set "-a shadow" it works. So I assume I have saslauthd working at least. But, if I set "-a pam" as listed above, it fails I believe it may be a PAM issue, could be sasl, but I'm hoping maybe someone will see the easy answer. Way to tell if monitor is on or off???

I am looking for a way to tell if the monitor is on or off? xset q - seems to only work if DPMS turns off the monitor. If I or someone actually turns off the monitor xset q still shows on. If I do xset dpms force off ; sleep 5; xset q the monitor shows off. So is there a way to tell if the monitor is actually on or off? Thanks, Jerry

Installing Java on X86_64 CentOS 4.1

I have some problems installing java support to my browser (firefox). This support I installed with no problem when running the 32 bit version on the same machine, but now I can't find the plugin. I running on S754 - AMD XP3000 this is the file i download: jre-1_5_0_04-linux-amd64.bin And I am following the installation instructions from this link: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml Everything seems to install perfectly, but the libjavaplugin_oji.so is not included, I can't find. Maybe there is an other file to link up to? If someone has the answer, please! kai
