Install Trouble

I've download the 4 CD ISO images from 3 different mirrors, tried burning the ISO's on different computers, and I still get the same errors. When I go to boot up with the CD1, I eventually get a Call Trace and then a kernel panic: not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt. It points to the CDROM or the CD itself. I can boot up with Knoppix and Mepis fine. The other odd thing is that these same CD's will boot up fine in VM Ware. The last odd thing is that I've got a system running CentOS. For grins and giggles, I booted up with the CD's on it and I got the same error. I do get the very first boot: screen where I hit <enter> after that, it bombs out after it detects and loads some other items. It never gets to the Check Media screen I can't tell if I'm dealing with a hardware problem or if it's a problem with the ISO's. Nothing makes sense! Any help is appreciated.

Command for physical (hard) disk information

Hi Folks, How can I get the hard disk information like, its serial number, description ...through a command that like the kind of information we get on Solaris thro' 'iostat -En'. Thanks for any help,

The role of /.autorelabel

I could not get vsftpd to start; kept getting the "vsftpd Dead Subsys Locked" error. On doing a Google search, I came across a fix (lost the site unfortunately) and as I recall, it has something to do with copying a file and having the incorrect SElinux settings (I have SElinux disabled). The fix was to do a fixfiles, relabel (commands that I have never used) or a touch of "/.autorelabel" and rebooting. Add to your soap-box: the standard 'man' is disregarded, you are left to use (non-standard) info. There's a man -k call, I haven't found an info -k equivalent. Yes, there's a great calling for thankless man page writing in the *nix world. New to the list and one quick question

Hi all, Let me start off with a little back ground. I am running right now RH9 fully updated on a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC with 512megs of Ram, 18G SCSI HD. I run this at home so this is no critical server, unless you ask my girls when I have it down, I have been debating on upgrading to Fedora until I started looking at CentOS. I have download the ISO and burned them with X-CD-Roast. Here is my question: I tried running the mediacheck on the cd's and it would lock up right before the media check screen appears. I have googled and tried the ide=nodma and other options, but to still no avial. I also ran memtest86, now here is where the kicker is. It did show there was some errors, and these I will check out. But I then got a wild idea and pulled out my 1st CD of RH9, dropped it into the CD drive and at the boot prompt ran media check. RH9 disk 1 checked out fine, so I dropped in the CentOS disk 1 and ran it. It checked out fine and so did all the rest of them. Is this a vaild test?? Or am I just blowing in the wind here?? OT: setting up a bridge

hi all, I am using centos3.5 for my firewall home. I would like to do some tests with bridge firewalling. When i try to create the bridge, brctl givtes me this error: br_add_bridge: Package not installed. i find some answers about this error, but the most important is the one that says driver is not loaded into kernel. In my /boot/config-2.4.21-32.0.1.EL file appears compiled as a module, but how can i load it with modprobe?? .... :(( Thanky you -- CL Martinez carlopmart {at} gmail {d0t} com

OT: ProFTPD web browser login

I'm setting up a ftp server. I need to be able to have people have a non interactive login through a web browser into a chrooted directory i.e. ftp://somewhere.com. I also need to have a URL that will auto login a user to a chrooted directory. These chrooted directories will be RO for all anonymous access. That said I also need to have a staff account that has upload rights to these directories. Before I was able to use with Windowz FTP servers: ftp://user:password@somewhere.com. This does not pass with proftpd or vsftpd. Are there conf entries that will allow these? I know there are security risks associated with this but it is an environment I have to deal with anyway. S-ata controller

Hi List I have a problem with 2 drivers 1. Intel 1000 GT dosen't work correctly 2 Promise SATA 300 TX2 plus/TX4 dosen't work This is not a RAID card, just an S-ata controller for a new s-ata Hitachi 500 Gb drive I have tried CentOS-4.1 kernel, but sadly nothing Any clues anyone? Cheers Jan Erik

Does a list of compatible motherboards
