Moving a Centos 3.5 instalation with software raid 1 array + LVM from a pIII to a pIV computer.

Hi All, We have an old Centos 3.5 file and database server, running on a pIII computer with Intel 820 mother board. It has a software raid 1(mirror) + LVM on two IDE hard disk. I want to upgrade to a newer computer with pIV - 2.4GHz on a Intel D848PMB mother board. Should I expect any problems if I just move the array from the old machine to the new and boot there? Should I do any preparations(I know I must do a full backup), before moving the disks? Best regards! ageorgiev

Recommendation On Ping And Alert Tool

A bit off topic, but I keep looking for an answer to this question and coming up with nothing... so I thought I would go to the gurus. :-) Can anyone recommend a good package for pinging other devices and sending an email/alert when they go down? I'm aware of all kinds of more complex things with GUIs and a zillion other bells and whistles we aren't looking for, but we just want a simple tool (could be daemon or something run from cron) that runs every 1 - 5 minutes and alerts us when stuff disappears. Would need some basic logic like only sending one email/alert when something goes down (vs sending an email every 1-5 minutes until it comes back up). :-) We need to avoid a requirement for an X-windows GUI, but a web-GUI would probably be fine (a GUI-less command-line thing would probably be best). Problem with gnome

Hi all, I am using Centos 4.1 with Gnome and my updates are OK (When I do yum update, I have nothing anymore) Normally, with GNOME there's a task bar in the bottom of the screen. If we open an application and we minimize its window, it is always avalaible in this task bar. There are other things in this task bar : a button on the left which is used to minimize all the opened windows and 4 buttons on the right which are used to change the workspace. Yesterday, I had a problem with the station and I had to shut it down with the power button of the Linux station. After a restart, I had a message telling me that there were three applications which were shutted down uncleanly (I don't remember which) and know there is nothing anymore in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen (it is gray). The error message doesn't appear anymore. Does anybody already had this problem ? What can I do to restart this taskbar ? Thank you for your help. Jean LEE

compatible wireless devices

Can anyone recommend compatible wireless cards for desktops? Also what software/packages/etcwould I need to get the devices working? I have the centrino ipw2200 pkg running nicely on my laptop, I suspect that none of the desktop wireless cards will be this easy... Try OpenNMS. Nagios and Zabbix can also do historical data, although I'm not sure about SNMP. I've tried using both and by dar, I feel that OpenNMS is easier to work with. The installation of Tomcat and Java is the hardest item. I do know that OpenNMS can do SNMP. Pretty much, I give OpenNMS the IP address and it finds the common services. You may have to go in and define custom services (I had to since my Oracle servers have multiple listener ports). It will try the default SNMP string, but if you change it, there is a web form to change it. You can also enter your asset information through the web form. You can also create custom reports that can be called on the fly. Check out http://www.opennms.org for the screen shots and more information. I'll second the recommendation of Mon. It is simple and powerful with very few requirements. Mon.cgi will give you web-based access to the status information. It also has the advantage of being written in Perl, so making minor changes to the monitoring or alerting routines is very easy. The logic to only notify once (or twice, or three times) per outage is built-in. You can also change the notification routines based on the time of day and/or day of the week. For instance, I set mine so that it doesn't bother notifying me about scheduled daily reboots of some of the servers. Bowie
