Hi Trying to run up a JVM on a box thats running 4.2 - The JDK version is j2sdk1.4.2_03 and the exact error is below Unable to load native library: /opt/j2sdk1.4.0/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_waitpid, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference any ideas thanks

Hi folks, I've just finished rsyncing/downloading/jigdoizing the entire i386/x86_64 CentOS 4.2 distribution. If anyone is interested go to http://mirror.tcs.ii.uj.edu.pl/jigdo/ You'll need to edit the .jigdo file by hand to change the server section [Servers] CentOS42=file:/opt/mirrors/centos/4.2/ to point to a local mirror (file, http or ftp), ie. to use kernel.org: [Servers] CentOS42=http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/4.2/ While doing this I have come upon a few questions: a) it seems the server cd's have a lot of stuff not present in the normal directory mirror, I guess this is an artifact of the build process? [the template files for the servercd's are ~120MB] b) what are the .newheaders and .repodata directories on i386 CD1? c) why do the mirror repodata/*.xml.gz files not match neither the CD nor DVD versions for i386? d) why does the i386 DVD not match ideally, but the x86_64 DVD matches for _all_ files. Considering the i386/x86_64 mirror takes up 7.7GB (without iso's) that's quite a bit... I also imagine the noarch files are shared with most of the other architectures... so I'd assume another 400MB per every next arch can be saved... f) Why aren't jigdo files available on the site? They'd really come in useful, especially in the situation I had where I already had a complete mirror of all the files, but I still had to bittorrent the CD/DVD's even though I had 99% of the required data on disk! megaide support for 4.2

In 2.4 there used to be a megaide driver for certain ata raid controllers. In 2.6 I can't access more than my /dev/hda , I can see my other 4, I can create filesystems on them, but I can't mount them Anyone knows how to use these on a 2.6 kernel (Centos 4.2) greetings Kris 00:02.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. How to upgrade hard drive in a single drive (with LVM2) computer

This one has me stumped and I'm sure I must be missing something trivial. What is is eludes me. I have a 20G drive that will be replaced with a 160G drive. The /boot partition is just a standard type 83, and the swap is an 82. The system root partition is in a LV, as is the /home partition. I've upgraded hard drives dozens of times without incident, but never ona system with LVM. I did this (booted into single-user mode): 1) Create the appropriate partitions on the new drive 2) Created an EXT3 partition and copies over /boot, ran GRUB to make it bootable. 3) did the mkswap on the second partition. 4) did a pvcreate on the third partition on the new drive, then created th VG (vg1) and LV for the two paritions. 5) Mounted the new partitions under /mnt, then used tar to copy the files from the old to the new (excluding tmp mnt sys & proc) 6) Edited grub.conf (on the new drive) to point to VG1 instead of VG0 for sysroot. Edited /mnt/etc/fstab to point to the new locations (I changed the names of the logical volumes slightly.) 6) Disconnected the old drive, then booted. The system booted, but got only as far as 'Red Hat nash' ... then complained that it couldn't find vg0. (the volume group on the other disk). I can't get into single-user mode when booting this single drive. I'm trying to do this whole thing non-destructively so that the original drive is a backup, until we confirm that the new drive is behaving well. Are these steps correct (and they should be without LVM) or is there something much easier and obvious that I'm missing? I could, I suppose, add the new parition into the original volume group, and do the 'pvmove' dance to get things over (as explained briefly in the LVM-HOWTO on Red Hat's site) but it wouldn't leave a bootable system on the original drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! TIA, Barry

Yumex, yum-utils

I saw the link someone posted to SL (Scientific Linux) yumex rpm's. I grabbed the SRPMS, changed some references from SL to CentOS in the spec files and rebuilt the RPMS. I managed to get yumex up and running by manually configuring yumex.conf. What is the use of the yum-utils and the dozen or so utilities? Are there any docs? (Bearing in mind my hack may have damaged the SL installation) CentOS should have its own yumex/yum-utils considering the likes of Scientific Linux and Lineox have had them for a long time. __________________________________________ Yahoo! slow GUI

System: PIII 500Mhz 128MB memory 20GB drive Current CentOS 4.2 Gnome GUI The system runs 'idle' at around 70Mb memory used and 4% cpu usage. But whenever I go to start a task: Start Gedit, Services tool, a Terminal window, Firefox It takes a minute or so. CPU mayyyypeak at 100% briefly then come down. Memory has yet to exceed 100Mb usage. Any pointers of where to look to see why it is slow?

Large partition problem

I really hope someone has a clue on this one.... :) I've got a 2.2TB array mounted on a 3ware 9500 controller. I installed it last week ensuring that LBA was enabled and using gpt with parted to get the full size available on one array. I also think I chose reiserfs for the array. We then moved ALOT of data to the array. Problem now is that after a reboot LBA doesn't seem to be in effect. From dmesg: sdc : very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). Any tips on how I can get the array mounted again? And what might have changed since last boot? :) I've rolled my own kernel to get reiser support, but I haven't recompiled or done any changes... way to disable keyboard and mouse ports

Is there a way to disable the keyboard and mouse ports? I have a machine in a public area running an application that no-one needs to touch. However, someone could come up and plug a keyboard in it and mouse and be logged in as that user (not root). Is there a way to disable the mouse and keyboard so only remote ssh connections will control the PC if changes need to be made. This would also include any usb device which is fine and the PS2 keyboard and mouse. Thanks, Jerry
