Upgrading to CentOS 4.2 from FC2?

I am considering moving a Fedora Core 2 server to CentOS 4.2. Is it possible to do this as an in place upgrade? Also, I have a RH9 server that I would like to migrate to CentOS. Is that possible? Thanks for any insights, Steve

MythTV on Centos 4

I'm starting a project to build a MythTV box for my living room. Anyone else currently working with MythTV on CentOS 4? Here are some of the gotcha's I've worked through so far: - I was originally planning on using KnoppMyth. But their CD appears to be only for i386. Without realizing it, the P4 CPU I picked is one of the newer ones with the x86_64 extensions. It won't boot i386. Thus, my plan B is going with CentOS4 x86_64 and installing from the ATrpms collection. Here's someone who's already doing this: http://umich2.com/archives/category/linux/mythtv/ - I picked up a cheap Radeon 7000 with TV out. Wrong! Various posts seem to say that the TV Out functionality is not supported by the X.org radeon driver. It *does* work with the vesa driver though. I just don't know if video and DVD playback will work with the vesa driver. Does anyone know? - The stock RedHat kernel does *not* have irda support enabled. I downloaded 2.6.13.2, enabled irda, and my motherboard's irda port is found and configured. We'll see if I can get it to work with the IR adapter in the nMediaPC case I bought. Kirk Bocek

Some 3Ware questions

I have not used RAID controller boards to date since I have relied on the built in RAID on the motherboards. Thanks to the informative message Byron, I realize the deficiencies of doing RAID 1 this way, especially now that the builtin is out of date with Kernel used by Centos. I have 4 ATA drives that were configured in two pairs. I assume that I need a 3Wave controller that has 4 ports like the 7506-4LP...correct? Has anyone had a problem with this version of Squid, we are using Centos4, and this is the latest package of squid. The problem occurs when a host attempts to make a SSL connection that involves a reverse DNS lookup, it will cause squid to crash. I ran squid with the "-d 10" option to find out what happens, and this is the error i get. How you reproduce this error is, find a SSL enabled website, get the IP address and type into your browser, https://<ipaddress>/ and this will produce the error (squid): rfc1035.c:417: rfc1035RRUnpack: Assertion `(*off) <= sz' failed. Squid will then proceed to restart itself. Has anyone else found this problem? Regards, Peter K

CentOSPlus: What happened to Postgresql?

I've been using Postgresql 8.1 on CentOS X86/64 for a about a month, but the RPMs seem to have vanished from CentOS Plus! I'll remember your advice when I'll encounter my first problem, though I may just as well read the docs again when that happens... :) --- I second the djb comment, the guy is an arrogant prick; if something doesn't compile on your server he thinks its your fault. (i.e. back when he was linking all of his software to the wrong error.h and you had to mod it to get it to compile). Not only is it not written that well; but qmail for example. You have to install another piece of software to control relay, and it is totally non intuitive in any way. As far as tinydns the idea of having to install a "control daemon" to run his software is kind of ridiculous to me. Bind really couldn't be any easier to use, and it works every time. -Drew

Easy way to reject all incoming packets except from certain IPs?

Is there an easy way to reject all incoming packets except those that come from certain IPs? I can't find any way via iptables or via the GUI provided with CentOS (or another GUI for CentOS) without having to resort to Shorewall. It's fine if the answer is "go with Shorewall". I just didn't want to have to become a Shorewall expert for this really small task. Any help/advice on this is appreciated. Am I missing an easier way? Preston

Junk mail filtering in Evolution

I'm upgrading a few clients to CentOS 4.2. They have been using Evolution 1.x, so this is the first release that will have junk mail filtering. So I've switched from Thunderbird to Evolution on my own desktop tp better support them. I have been dutifully marking the spam and the ham. But the filter has so far not flagged a single email on its own. (I've flagged about a hundred so far, so it's had time to learn.) Is there something in the config that I need to set to get it to filter? One possible kink is that my own mail account uses imap. My users will be using pop3. Thanks, Steve

custom vnc install disk [dnk]

Hi all.... I had posted hte following on teh centos forums, and thought there might be additional people in here who do not browse those forum, so after 4 days I am posting over here as well (sorry for the double - but figured after 4 days it was safe to do so). Hi there.... I am trying to make a custom centos server cd that will essentially do the following: throw the disk in, boot the machine, and have it connect to a listening VNC viewer on another machine - then just do the install as per normal (nothing else automated other than the VNC connection). My goal is that since I have limited space at home I want to be able to load centos onto a machine just by plugging in an ethernet cable (no monitor/mouse/keyboard), and booting it. I know using VNC is possible and such, but in the tutorials I have read, you basically you type 'linux vnc' at the boot prompt. I was reading about using a kickstart file, but the same type of issue you need to press "enter" to start the vnc install. Any ideas on how to get around this? This is what I did so far (so that maybe someone can point out my error). Now just for detail I created a SIMPLE ks.cfg file with the following: firewall --disabled vnc --connect 192.168.0.100 And when adding directives to a kickstart file - does hte order matter? IE when addign hte vnc directive, does it have to come after the networking info, etc? it was located on my cd at: /isolinux/ks.cfg I edited the file /isolinux/isolinux.cfg <snip> default linux prompt 1 timeout 1 display boot.msg F1 boot.msg F2 options.msg F3 general.msg F4 param.msg F5 rescue.msg F7 snake.msg label linux kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom:/isolinux/ks.cfg <snip> As you can see i set the time out to happen immediately (hoping ot get it to jump right into the install). And I added the location to my KS file to the default option. Any ideas?
