Crashing Nameservers

Had two nameservers crash in the last few hours... This 'never' happens! On the console was sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast: 255.255.255.255 on eth0 sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast: 255.255.254.255 on eth0 with the IP address of the offender? in front of that line. Determine what changed between CentOS 4.1 and CentOS 4.2

Is there a way to determine what package changed from CentOS 4.1 to 4.2 (or between any two versions)? I need to create a yum repository to upgrade some machines that cannot talk to the Internet. Thanks for any help. ID:FONGVANG

64-bit CentOS 4.2

What exactly is different between the 32 and 64-bit version of CentOS 4.2? The kernel (drivers, file system, etc.) is probably compiled to support 64-bit and probably glibc. What're some important differences between the 32 and 64-bit version? I'm just trying to get a deeper understanding. Thanks in advance for any help. FongVang

Linux boot floppy to install over net

With all this going on, it seems to me there MUST be a floppy image that will load the minimum shell (including PCMCIA drivers!) and all over-the-net installs (HTTP, FTP, of NFS). That would really help on one old notebook I have. Oh, and of course this is for CentOS 4.2!

date in logrotate

Quick logrotate question for the group. To comply with a PHB mandate, I need to keep our apache logs for a minimum of 2 years, and will be periodically required to hand over chunks of the logs from specific dates/times. While extending the timeframe of logrotate is easy, I've found that there's no elegant solution in the RH/CentOS logrotate for appending dates to the filename. I'm curious to know what others with similar requirements are doing for this. I'd like to stay within the default system framework (no 3rd party apps as they have to be "approved"), so mostly I'm looking for suggestions for a more elegant postrotate script. Thanks

DNS wizard

Do we have anyone here who is a bind/dns wizard? I've been under the impression my dns setup which I've used for so many years on a bsd machine is now considered lame. If there is someone who would not mind taking a look at my configuration to see where I'm missing something, or where the difference lies between bind 9 and previous bind 8 configs? I'd prefer to do this off list via direct e-mail. The zone is very small, and the files are small too.. Sam

Was that version in 3.0 or 3.1 of CentOS? Also have a requirement for kernel 2.4 from the Tivoli Integrated Solution Console as well. Not sure on this requirement as well, I do know that with CentOS 4 the installer blew up with "unsupported kernel version xxx". Tried tricking the installer by replacing the uname binary with a script that returned what the other linux gives from `uname -a` but it didn't work.

Install challenges

As mentioned in my previous post I just completed a rebuild on my new dns/mail server. And it was almost a disaster. When loading from CDs I would get a dialog that an rpm could not be found, perhaps bad media. I would pop out the CD, click OK and things continued. Until finally it would not. I had two copies of the CDs and neither worked! So I happened to have the CDs on my web server (NT running Apache 2.something old) and since these systems were on the same subnet I opted for an HTTP install. Got that going and about 25% in, it hung. And no way to tell it, please try the server again. (other systems could access the server and see the files in question). I tried to get apache running on another Linux system I am building but took a wrong turn there so I desperation I tried the CD install. Everything was working this time until disk 3 about the last rpm. ARGH! So I took the CD out and cleaned it really well, and it found the rpm ni question. Oh what a weekend. I have GOT to get a good way to do an install......
