HP (compaq) RAID - How to get alerts?

Hi All, Background: I have HP RAID setups (Smart Array 5, shows up as /dev/cciss/c0d0) on my DL380s, and they run great with CentOS. I have had a drive failure (HDD lights up amber), so I pulled the HDD, replaced it and the RAID controller rebuilt the array in a jiffy - no probs. My question: I cant find anything in the logs to alert me that a drive failed - this makes sense since the RAID is hardware, so i presume i need some management software however i cant find anything on HP or Compaq's sites to tell me what software i need to be running. I imaging it is something like cpq_alert or such. | Does anyone on the list run HP or Compaq hotswapable kit? How do you get alerted to failures? Thanks, MrKiwi

Switch to Nvidia from ATI

I am having some issues (e.g. System lock ups) with my ATI 9250 Video card. I am thinging about replacing it with either a Nvidia FX5200, FX5500, or a FX5600 card. Is anyone using one of these cards on Centos 4.1 with the stock (XORG) nv driver?

The problem using things like dyndns and forwarding to a dynamic ip is that there is a possibility that when your ip has changed mail would be attempted to be delivered to the next user that gets your previous ip. Even with v. low dns timeouts there is still that risk. Better to get a static ip, or failing that use a pull system like fetchmail. There is even a way to set it up with smtpauth Also I don't have a problem with a dynamic ip since I have a client installed there is a couple of places that seem to do a better job then others. I used dnsexit because it is free so far no complaints.

I have now reverted to the standard xorg nv driver --------------------------------------- You have to weigh the risk of th exploit with the benefits of using the software. What are the odds that someone is really going to target your computer out of the millions connected to the Internet? What value does using this driver provide? Is that value worth the risk? For me, without using this driver, I can't provide the hardware-accelerated 3D stereo my users need to do their work. Since my systems are behind a firewall with NAT, I think the risk of falling victim to this exploit is pretty low (yes, I know firewalls are hardly a panacea). In my case, the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. As to why NVidia hasn't fixed this problem, that's a discussion for another mailing list. CentOS guest for VMware, any similar setup?

Hi, I'm about to setup a CentOS4 server to install VmWare Server on it. Then I'll run 2 main guest OS, Microsoft SBS 2003, and a CentOS development LAMP server. Except from the clock settings, is there any problems/comments? Regards, Ugo

Changing kernel params in CentOS 4.2

Hello - One of my users would like a kernel parameter changed. We're running CentOS 4.2 so I'm not sure if we need to upgrade the kernel for this change or not. He's seen that in the 2.6.11.12 kernel "PIPE_SIZE is defined in include/linux/pipe_fs_i.h and takes on the value of PAGE_SIZE" He wants PIPE_SIZE to be increased to 8*PAGE_SIZE. Can this be changed in the 2.6.9 kernel? If so, where would this be changed? If not, what kernel would be suggested for an upgrade (we have some experience with FC3 & the 2.6.11 kernel already)? Last, in your opinion does changing the kernel rev greatly change the name of what you're running? If we go to say the 2.6.16 kernel on our CentOS 4.2 system, is it still valid to call it CentOS 4.2? I meant a different make/autotools. I prefer not to change my build environment. My packages should be able to build on the original distribution, not original distribution + new make/autotools. I prefer not to deviate from Red Hat. I prefer not to replace Red Hat's make/autotools. For unmaintained distributions like RH7 or RH9 I couldn't care, but for EL2.1 and EL3 this is very much a liability. CentOS 3.8 and ESS ES1878 sound chip?

It can work in either native mode, or in SoundBlaster compatible mode. Neither is detected by CentOS 3.8.
